Turns out there was a Swiss-American Doctor named Elisabeth Kubler-Ross who was responsible for the concept of "The 5 stages of grief."

I'd say its probably not related, but this is Spurs. It's always related.

"I keep calling him but he just doesn't hear me." Def (deaf) as in a defender?

and Dr. = MD. So Def. Mid.
Old Benjamin = Old/Broken/Injured Ben. So the injury-prone Ben.
Dr. Ross = ER. So DER

Solution: The Injury-prone Defensive Midfielder Sven Bender

Old Benjamin was the name in of the Donkey in animal farm = Ass
I keep calling him but he doesn't hear me so I took him to the doctor = Ear ill
Dr Ross was George Clooney's character in ER = ER
they did a good job of fixing him = Mend he

Ass ear ill ER Mend He

Definite interest on our part, managers preference but waiting to assess his options. The interest though is mutual

"Poor old Benjamin, I keep calling him but he just doesn't hear me. So I took him to see Dr Ross, who has done a really good job of fixing him."

Someone poor and old = ill(a)
Benjamin needs fixing = mend(i)

That's my partial stab at it.

Nailed it early @Indisguise. Nice work

@SFCS You disagree with what exactly?
