Story of our lives, season after season we are always a couple of players short of a full picnic
I really feel we've always somehow missed one piece of the jigsaw too. The piece to take us to 'the top'!
The Carrick years I thought we missed a Ledley partner and a nifty winger
The Berbatov years someone creative in midfield
The Modric/Bale/VdV years someone deadly up front (though Crouch was ok)
Now it feels like we are several pieces short of the top 4 let alone great things. Keeping Hugo, Vertonghen, Kane, Eriksen and adding some steel in MF and pave up front could be it though...

Can't believe some people are defending us if we don't get a CDM.

It's almost as crucial as bringing in a striker imo - Dier, Mason, Alli, Bentaleb is nowhere near good enough for a top 6 side.

Not sure where the DM's coming from though, now that the Witsel links have dried up...Hopefully some DM ITK is incoming

Whilst I agree we need another CM, you do realise that the midfield you said isn't good enough for top 6, finished 5th last season, with a weaker defence behind them?

Bit of a joke name in response to the BSoDL reference.

They spend all TF whining like they've been slapped around like a Red headed stepchild.

Hence... Gingers :)

Ah right I see.....just seems a bit dumb to me to refer to anybody whining as that. I doubt you would do it for black/Chinese/indian people or you would be deemed offensive.

Not being uptight or anything, just personal view that's all.

The original question was a legit question, I thought I had missed something or some kind of cryptic clue

Anything short of a CDM & ST will be seen as a FAILURE, Despite how some may try to see the positive side.

So, some people will be positive, some people (like you, based on your capital letters) will be negative.

That's a new piece of information!

Quick, let me put that in the Deadline Day Ticker thread ...

As good as I think Dier Could be at dm, it makes no sense to sell 4 midfielders and not get at least 1 in. We need other options we can't rely on an inexperienced 21 year old to be the only possibly defence to attack linchpin.

That's before everyone around us, including the teams below, strengthened. Pool, Swansea etc

I'm a bit bemused why people keep insisting that we should sign a 4th striker. We had one to start with and we've signed two more, either of whom can play as a central attacker or on either side iof a front 3.

And we have another striker whom we can't get rid of.

Relying on Dier to cover defensive midfield all season seems rather risky and his use in our opening 4 matches seems to represent an acknowledgement by Pochettinio that the pairing of Bentaleb and Mason, talented though they are, does not protect the defence effectively. I'd rather see a good defensive midfielder arrive. We have enough strikers.

I think we can get away without a new DM this season, but a back up striker for Kane is a total necessity-don't see how we are covered for cup games without one. Hopefully bera does come off- however Peace seems adamant he won't deal with us whatever pulis thinks, so we'd damn well better have an alternative target.

Half agree. Striker has to be the priority, as we only have one currently. CM, would like an instant starter to land, but we do have other options, not ideal, but better covered than CF.
In reality, there's been more than enough time to address this, and the ITK generally seem confident it's in hand.
1. Just Berahino - workable.
2. Berahino and a CM (either Witsel or a loan signing), damn good window.
3. Neither a CF or a CM, woefully short sighted from the powers that be, to expect success.

Anyhow, I'm choosing to follow the belief that it'll be option 2 from that list. ITK in unison that the club know what needs to be done, work is progressing. COYS

David, they are not strikers. They are wide players who can play there- just like Chadli. By your logic, Chadli is a striker as well.

Our main deficiencies last season were in defence. We've signed three defenders. That's the second most important accomplishment this summer.

The third most important achievement was signing two quick attackers, as we were badly short of pace.

The most important transfers this summer were the ones that haven't happened: Lloris and Kane.

I'd put the as-yet-unresolved need for a defensive midfielder somewhere between "defenders" and "pacy attackers".
