We were one of the wealthiest clubs in the old Division 1, the last, I'm pretty sure, to have advertising round the side of the pitch. Yes, the money was self-generated, but we bought virtually the entire team; the only truly home-grown player was Ron Henry. Peter Baker came from Enfield for peanuts, but the rest were signed at what were then dizzying prices; it doesn't really matter that the buying was targeted (and we didn't really recreate Rowe's style—Bill was far less purist and we were known to go Route One on occasion).

All good points but the fact the money was already in the club differentiates us from the more recent Chelsea and City model I believe

When two quarrel, the third party would be ... While the English Premier League clubs Liverpool and Swansea to Hoffenheim's Gylfi Sigurdsson (22) were courting, according to its IMAGE Information slammed league rivals Tottenham. The last loan at Swansea midfielder will go for ten million euros to the Spurs, where the former Bundesliga star Rafael van der Vaart is under contract. Tottenham in England was fourth. Then, the "shooting" countries, such as IMAGE christened the Icelanders for great goals, continue to shoot high. 2010/11 he was the best nine goals with Hoffenheim. In Swansea, he shone with seven goals and five templates in 18 games in March for the best players in the Premier League elected. Everything looked like a move to Swansea. With Hoffenheim which had agreed to almost nine million transfer fee. Sigurdsson not only played with. As his former coach Brendan Rogers moved from Swansea to Liverpool, suddenly, the "Reds" hot candidate. Came to Tottenham ...

Point being these purchases aren't from a huge injection of owner cash in fact the it'd model was good until the Irish then yanks came in and put them in a more troublesome place than they should be.

We know we have a new manager coming. We are hopeful of Vertonghen coming. You (and JJ) seem to think there is some big financial deal going down (sale/part sale/stadium rights). Anything else ?

Yes.. we still dont have a striker

How people can't see a difference between money generated by the club's revenue and popularity versus billionaire investors is beyond me. I despair.

End of the day, most clubs buy their success. It's part and parcel of sports. Sure there's the occasional great story like Montpelier, but even Dortmund, everybody's favorite, are as rich as we are, and do pay good wages. Sure there's a different feeling to Chelsea/City but that has as much to do with the popularity in the sport, the global aspect of the game, the money from Champions League, etc. It was a different sporting world in 1960 as its hard to assess how different clubs then were from now in how they built their squad. I understand that people feel this is seedier and I feel it at times too, but ultimately I think your argument is spot on.

This is in regards to Akqayid's post about AEG.....

"The notion that AEG would throw around that type of cash I'd have to see to believe. that's not what AEG are as a company. Do people realize that AEG are significantly smaller then Tavistock Group, a company that Joe Lewis owns? I can see AEG being involved in some way but the amount of investment that some seem to think they would make likely would never happen."

From Wikipedia:

'It's a little known fact that the parents of the 1961 Double winning side were all born within 3 miles of White Hart Lane. As they grew up and their lives evolved, they moved away and settled around the country. Throughout this time, Tottenham, who had a widely envied extensive scouting network, kept in touch via the medium of postcards and asked to be informed should they bear any male children. During the Second World War, Tottenham opened an evacuee football training camp in the tranquil safety of the Norfolk Broads and by some chance, Mr. and Mrs Blanchflower, Brown, Henry, Allen, Mackay, Dyson, Baker, Norman, White, Jones, Smith and Jetset, all still in close contact with the club, decided to send their children away there for safety.

Who are these people that can't see that? Can they please put up their hands?

Money, whatever its source, is money. Its source is ultimately irrelevant. There is no moral distinction between 'earned' and 'invested', and to argue that there is is mere casuistry. We had more of it than most clubs, we used it buy players that would bring us success.

you do lay it on thick when you've got a bee on your bonnet ss57 i think mackay white and Allen were the latest signings in the double side but therest of the team had been there at least five years or more predating nicholson as manager. that is hardly like chelsea and city, in fact its morelike spurs now.

Seems to be a little disagreement at present.

Just to lighten the mood :

BINDIPPERS ARE IN MELTDOWN

They all thought Sig was theirs (and all their ITK until this evening said that) and now even the Liverpool Echo are saying Sig to us.

No idea if true at present but its extraordinary how the bindippers are reacting !
