I'm going to hold out hope that, even if we don't snag Pulisic during this transfer window, these current flirtations are part of a longer courtship that will be consummated sometime in the next couple of years.

If the limiting factor is Dortmund's transfer fee, this suggests that Pulisic's camp is open to joining Spurs. This makes sense for many reasons. His parents have been fairly savvy about his development, and are surely aware of Poch's ability to nurture young talent. Dortmund's been a bit of a mess, what with 4 coaches in the last year or so. They have also used him more on the wing, while everywhere else he had a more central role.

His contract with Dortmund runs until 2020. Conceivably, his transfer fee will be lower if there is a prospect of him leaving the next year on a free transfer, or if one of those favorable clauses is triggered. And he will still be under 21. The downside risk is that he turns into the next Mbappe and a bidding war causes his fee to skyrocket.

Im a bit concerned about what some people might consider a statement signing. I consider a big name/wonderkid as a statement not breaking our transfer record on average/potential players.

Ill remain optimistic but there is very clearly a major drop in positivity from the ITKs. It looks to be same old spurs as usual

Now imagine what he could do if he had players starting at a higher level...
True. To be honest though, I don't think Poch likes working with 'big name' established players. It feels like he's more comfortable with young players that can be made into our image if you like, they will be more receptive.

Until sales occur I'm not holding out hope on anything. We only spend what we earn, that isn't going to change this summer and so far we've not earned anything. Once Toby goes we'll bring in two players with that money I'd imagine. Anything beyond that will depend on further sales.
It's annoying ITK saying it's only hopeful of breaking transfer record but even with new stadium I had no expectations of it happening anyway.

Fairly average walker won young pl player of the year. Rose won sunderland player of the year while on loan.

They were good players as is grealish.

To be fair I think most are on board with the Grealish signing now. It's more the Plea and Barrios potential signings in areas we arguably need first XI ready additions.

Barrios, no thanks. He's a **** and don't see where he fits unless Vic is sold.

Plea, never seen him play. He's got good numbers but it's the French league (see Lacazette) plus injuries.

Its pretty funny that you think you've worked this out, yet a very successful businessman somehow hasn't.
We obviously have a budget, and just because selling clubs are just playing hardball, it doesn't mean we can afford to just pay whatever they're demanding.
Obviously Levy is a more than competent businessman, done a fantastic job for us. My point is if we dont bow to demands why do we pursue these deals, every year we appear it ‘try’ for these players but we never pay what is needed. We must have an idea to what they are worth so move on quickly to next more feasible targets if we aren’t prepared to pay. All just my opinions looking in & my opinion is if we did pay over the odds for one player we wouldn’t do ‘a Leeds’...it’s adding the one final piece to the puzzle. One quality signing as opposed to quantity.

Fair enough mate, no harm in sounding out what clubs expect for players though...for all we know we may well have moved on to more feasible targets by now.
Just dont think that sort of money for a 19 year old is really gonna propel us to glory if im honest, I doubt he'd even make the starting 11.
I wouldn't be against really splashing out for a finished article first 11 type player though.

I agree with you regarding the big name/wonderkid as a statement & im guilty for banging on about paying ‘this, that & the other’ for players. Paying over the odds doesn’t need to be the answer but unfortunately the players linked are going to cost a fortune.

Yeah I hear what you are saying & I don’t know what’s happening behind scenes, I just get frustrated as it feels like we’ve been here & done it so many times.
However I have to admit certain things have progressed...I didn’t think we’d be paying Kane £200,000 a week so Levy needs credit for that.

Totally on board with that but then let’s go out and sign the best young players in the world not 25 year olds from Nice with one decent season and dodgy knees. I think it’s why SC is broadly on board with Grealish but not the others we are linked with.

Yes, its likely we will have to break our transfer record this year given how costs have gone through the ceiling. I'd like to think that we know who that player is and it isn't just a question of it could be anyone. This has been a slightly odd transfer window with the World Cup going on. Aside from that, it also feels like we've been linked with quite a few different players. Some with veracity some without. But all in all, i just can't get my arms around what will happen this summer. Most years we have a rough idea of what might happen. This year it feels like we could get a pot of gold or a sack of coal. Either of which wouldn't be a huge surprise at this juncture.

I know you said you 'think' Poch doesn't like working with big name players but I wonder if there's an element of truth in this? It's likely age or status isn't relevant as long as the players has the right attitude & commitment.

Don’t forget that wage packages etc still have to be taken into consideration. If we sign a big player now, Those who haven’t yet signed new contracts will want bigger wages. Spin it the other way - get them signed first and splash on the big name with big contract. That’s another reason I think we are currently being linked to prospects or perceived risks rather than the special signing.

Pretty damning tbh that even hercs normally hugely positive and excited demeanour is on the wane. Obv until the window shuts and we see who is holding up the shirt I’ll reserve judgement but feels we’re really at a crossroads now. Nothing less than a real game changer in cm or am is going to fulfil the previous hopes imo.
