Our sales have been balancing the additions. We spent 10m last summer actually.

Im sure Lewis can buck up £20m or so this window. Just like Levy probably can. They wont though.

I was of the opinion that we spent a tiny bit less than we made in the Summer, and that our wage bill was slightly reduced. Plus, given that Uncle Joe apparently gave us £50m before we even thought of selling Bale, we'd actually still have a fair bit of money left.

I think the whole 'Joe Lewis giving us £50m' thing was made up by a fake ITK from COYS.

To be fair, some joker usually comes out with the 'war chest' line every window, so they were just keeping up a tradition.

Furry muff. Still, I don't think we spent more than we made. Not that it feckin' matters anyway, I don't see Levy putting his hand in his pocket until he knows how much will be coming in from whatever money we get with this season's competitions. Or unless we sell someone, or something.

First rule of Tottenham January transfers:

If you, a fan, have identified a weakness within the squad, rest assured, the chairman disagrees.

In this case, the only truly glaring weakness is LB, so perhaps it's no coincidence we have two ITK snippets regarding a very promising young LB and a CB who can make a decent fist of playing there (and who won't, unlike Jan, get pissed off about it). In the case of Shaw, the rags are already suggesting that Chelsea and United are sniffing around, so we'll have serious competition.

I think it was A&C who pointed out that we also got a massive sum of money for the TV deal (like every other Prem club) - something like £30m - so ultimately we sold our star player and made a huge profit.

Levy'd.

I'm gonna quickly review Januarys past:

2013:
Fryers [Long standing Whiskey-face carve-up deal]
Holtby [Cheap, already bought, replaced injured Sandro in squad]
Star player that never came? Sneijder/Damaio
2012:
Nelsen [Free/cover]
Saha [Free/cover]
Nearly but not quite? Damaio
2011:
Pienaar [Discount deal, way to make money for agents]
Khumalo [Never heard of him ;)]
Levy's Wheelbarrow Round Europe? Aguero, Rossi, Negredo, Llorente
[Can't remember the MASSIVE PLAYER rumours prior to this^]
2010:
Kaboul! [Actually good, but they owed us money so we took him back]
Gudjohnsen [Loan, not too Gud]
2009:
Keane [Failed transfer, prob. owed us part of the fee]
Defoe [Thanks Harry, prob owed us some of the fee]
Palacios [Remember when we had no DMs?]
Chimbomba [see Pienaar]
Cudicini

By my reckoning we've not signed a bone-fide full price player with first team aspirations in January since Palacios.

Loans, lads, loans.
Think that's where we're at.
We spend money in the summer, maybe not net, but we spend in the summer. That's how we roll. :)

Hasn't shaw said he wants to stay at soton to develope for the time being?

This, I believe, was from a restaurateur in the States to whom one of Lewis' lieutenants confides the club's innermost secrets whilst perusing the wine list.

He has, but if we threw enormous quantities of money in his and Southampton's direction he might reconsider his options. I know I would.

Shaw's out of our league I reckon; he'll have the pick of clubs when he eventually moves, so unless we go and win the league or something, I doubt we could tempt him.
I'd be astounded if he isn't waiting for Chelsea.

Console yourself with the fact that Arsenal turned down buying him for £2m when he was 16.
They baulked at the price. :)
Idiots.

I tend to agree. Cashley can't go on forever and Shaw's a very obvious replacement. They can trump whatever we offer, as with Oscar and Willan, and obviously don't give a toss if they go even further into debt.

To be fair, now we have Baldini, hopefully we'll be a bit more strategic about our transfers.

In the summer there seemed a genuine logic and purpose behind the business we were doing. It was only the three deals that didn't come off in the last fortnight (Coentrao, Willian and Pato) where our squad is still lacking.

Levy'd.

£30m isn't even 10% of our stadium cost. Perhaps we're putting it towards a deposit for the mortgage.

Good point. I don't really have a problem with the club wanting to keep money back. I'm still surprised that we spent as much as we did in the summer. Half expected us to sell Bale and end up with Frazier Campbell on loan.
