I agree that we're worse in attack, but people definitely over-estimate Bale's contribution last season. He only played about 1000 minutes in the league, and the majority of his goals came in about 3 games against shit teams that we probably would've dominated anyway (Leicester being the notable exception). You can blame that on Jose, but that doesn't change the fact that he wasn't actually contributing to about 3/4 of our games.

His stats look incredible in isolation (his goals per minute were the best in the entire league I believe) but in the context of the season as a whole he really didn't do that much and was entirely absent in all of the big games due to non-performances or being benched.

There hasn’t been a decent one for years.
To be fair most were really happy last summer … but Doherty turned out to be awful, Bale never got played, Reggie ran out of steam and started playing for the other team and Vinicius was well … who knows he can score against Marine!

I thought last summer was great - this year surpassed my expectations but I think all the build up and inside info set our expectations too high and here we are on a comedown

To put it in perspective, we are a Kane doing his ankle for England next week away from our season being in crisis days after the window closes.
and were probably half a dozen ifs away from being relegated and half a dozen more from winning the league

I'm pretty happy with the incomings on the whole - disappointed with the ITK this morning, not that i personally think Adama is the answer but the fact that it's Nuno's number 1 target and he seemingly isn't being backed. Just really sends the wrong message IMO
That being said - as Trix just said, things can change quickly

I would have felt that way under Jose because he clearly had everything go through Kane but at leats Nuno is a coach who works on getting the best out of the entire squad so I expect him to find some solutions in the team. It will hurt us at points, for sure. But I don't think it'll be a crisis.

My issue is that it could always be much better but it's a case of settling.

With the recent ITK regarding Levy not sanctioning the Traore deal I wonder whether it might be because he just doesn’t think we can compete for the top four spots this season. Maybe he’s given up and would just rather keep the cash for other expenses.

And with Bergwijn I wonder whether he’s the one that sanctioned the purchase of the player in the first place and now doesn’t want to admit that it was a bad decision by selling him on for a loss.

And if the Club couldn’t get rid of Aurier (he’s still a decent RB) and Doherty (????) why spend the money on Royal when using it for Traore could transform the team on the field - and in the dressing room by signaling ambition.

All supposition but the ITK today is rather depressing. It makes one wonder how ambitious for on-field success is the chairman.

I suppose Levy has dared to do - nothing.

I'm not quoting all the examples because there's plenty of people suggesting that Paratici should be left to it. I'm not sure how people can say that Levy stay away and let Paratici get on with it not be suggesting he has control of the finances. Levy has to be involved from a financial point.
I think everyone realizes that after 20+ years. I can't discern the point you're trying to make apart from saying something like, "Levy must have his reasons whatever they may be, and that's good enough."

Now take away Gareth Bale's goal contribution ...

I don't disagree with what you are saying, but Moura would then get more game time, Gil looks like he will create a good amount of chances if he plays and Dele seems to be better than last year and if Lo Celso stays fit, again more creativity.

Surely number 1 must be the Charlie Kane 1 liners at #1 on Twitter

What irks me is we always seem to get so, so close to a team which could potentially elevate us to the next level and then inevitably fall short. A few years back we were arguably only 1 or 2 signings away from challenging for the title. Now, we are arguably only 1 or 2 signings away from making a serious challenge for the top four. I always end up with the feeling that the club is just too cautious to make the next step and pays the price for it. I get that they want to be sustainable, and that there is always a risk of overspending (see Ndombele) - but is there not also the very real risk of being left further behind by our rivals? Whatever the case, hindsight shows us that the strategy over the past few seasons has been poor, and so you would think perhaps they would shake it up in order to make up lost ground. Yet here we are again. Whatever happened to "to dare is to do"? Daniel Levy seems like the antithesis of that mantra.
