If we are done (as it looks like we are) I have to say that it feels like a very disappointing end to the window. All our rivals have strengthened their starting XIs and we quite simply haven't. It's not all doom and gloom as we have addressed some key weaknesses in the squad however it's a little disheartening

We definitely need a backup for Dembele but other than that we did ok. Liverpool don't have a good LB (and defence in general+GK) and Arsenal didn't really sign any class players like Ozil and Sanchez. I think we did better than both teams. We'll never be able to compete with City, Utd and Chelsea and there are clubs like Everton that are wasting money. Lookman and Dembele backup would make this a great transfer window and them plus Isco close to perfect but oh well...

A lot of people still really don't understand Poch and the project

He doesn't like signing ready-made solutions. He likes improving players and the unit through coaching. That's his bag, and that's why him and Levy are on the same page.

Making John McDermott our DoF was a big sign we'd follow the Winks/Onomah/Edwards/2CV route
Then why the fuck are we bidding for Sissoko?

The way I see it, Poch was on holiday today. Sure he was by a phone, but if he was really stressing the quality of the squad, I think he would have stayed behind, or flown home for today to make sure we got what he wanted. I think everyone was on the same page in terms of players and prices. Club legitimately tried a couple of different players in Isco and Sissoco but could not push either deal across the line. I don't fault the club in either case, and I doubt Poch is losing any sleep over it either.

Or he now knows Levy too well and knew nothing was going to happen

i doubt on that basis will be the 6th highest
In terms of wages we're definitely 6th, and some distance ahead of the other 14 clubs. I doubt transfers entirely make up for that - mid-table clubs spend big occasionally, not every year, so whilst it looks frustrating the difference over time isn't actually massive.

I get that we can't get the marquee signings done, but so many players with potential have gone to our rivals for money we should be able to match. Southhampton got Boufal and Hojbjerg for about £30m all together, who would have been nice swaps for Chadli and Mason - perhaps not upgrades, but definitely with higher ceilings.

Its almost like we overachieved to the point where the board don't know what to do with themselves. Whilst I have no ideas that they wouldn't want us to get into the CL, I do however believe that a 5-7th finish would suffice for the next few years as its a relatively good season without needing to spend some cash to get us to "the next level".
Agree, I think the board would be happy enough with that. I would be happy enough with 5th and building a brilliant stadium. IF, we still manage to play football like we did last year. TBH I believe a lot of teams performed well below par last year. So I think last years performance this year gets us 5th.

It's bloody madness.

I love how having CL for a season and a bit of extra cash seems to mean that the best players in Europe should be knocking down our door to play for us.
Only once in our recent history have we attracted a player from above us in the pecking order and that was VdV so why does anybody believe that has changed? They would rather imagine the nefarious shenanigans of Daniel Levy are secretly holding us back rather than just facing the truth that Isco/Gotze/Meyer etc just don't fancy us.

That leaves us with having to pay £55 million plus for the likes of Zaha and Sissoko and no-one in their right mind should do that.

The bottom line is that we have improved the squad, maybe not as much as we all would have liked, but we no longer have any glaring deficiencies.

The bottom line is we have weakened the squad. The reason that players like that fancy Liverpool or Chelsea over us is that those clubs spend money and we don't. I would be less pissed off if we had not sold both Chadli and Mason without replacement. The fact that we have shows that we have weakened the squad for no good reason. I don't think that is really a matter for debate.

What is the point of a new stadium if bottom half teams can outspend us 5-1 because of the TV money while we are pocketing profits to build the stadium?

Basically we are banking on a future advantage that is going to be dwarfed by the the TV money everyone has and will struggle to spend. If Everton are spending 60m on Bolasie/Sissoko and holding on to Lukaku, then what advantage is there going to be in 5 years?

Yeah it'll be great having a new stadium. But I don't think financially it'll matter as much as it would have ten years ago because of the huge influx of cash. The fact that we are holding back now because of the stadium, with such a great team and manager, is a shame and may be a huge mistake.
