The same money we would get next summer. The notion that his value would drop after another season with us is, imo, just not true.

Probably yes, not if he's sitting in the stands though.

I imagine we'd get slightly less next year as he'll have one year less on his contract.

This is different though. This is the constant and very public tapping up of our best player.
I'm with you Ed. I understand and accept that we (the club) shouldn't have to respond to every bit of speculation and all that but there comes a time (as he did with Modric) when we're looking for some reassurance and as the days go by without a denial i'm slowly becoming more and more convinced that we're selling. Hope i'm wrong. Onions.

Just scanned 20 pages trying to catch up looking out for the informative ratings, and the most informative post was the post where someone must have pressed the post button by accident and left a blank post.

I take it I haven't missed much apart from people getting their knickers in a twist?

And fuck you Burt, I used to like you, now you're dead to me :spitoutdummy:

I just saw a story on the Guardian site that Aston Villa are holding out for £6 mill for Darren Bent, Fulham look likeliest.

I'm scared, very scared.

Small cost to us? Ah yes. £80-100m is tiny. We can afford to throw that money away.

Depends if you think we can use this money. Barring the stadium (and Levy would get lynched if he did put the money towards it, I guarantee) I don't really see any benefit to us having it. The minute we get it in the bank teams, and agents for their players, will be trying to rip us off at every opportunity trying to grab a chunk of it.

To true mate. But not really like for like at the moment with the likes of Dortmund. But I agree that's the model we should be aiming for.

It'll be sad losing bale... but no player is bigger than the club. It's all about the cock for me. We'll pick ourselves up, brush ourselves down, hope real madrid's bum hurts more than ours. But the important thing is whatever deal we get is how we make it work for us and those two clubs, dortmund in particular are good clubs to learn from.

I feel like Ive been lied to. Did we know about the Bale bid before we got Soldado, Chadli and Paulinho?

This is what I've been thinking about.

But what will really fry your brain is....we'll never know the real, excuse the pun, timing. Yes you can cite when the speculation went into overdrive but I've got a horrible feeling that Soldado will be the big signing in terms of replacing Bale - well his goals etc

Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted with Soldado...but yesterday I thought it was in addition to Bale.

This 50 million we were told about won't bear fruit I'd imagine.

So why excactly are we going to sell Gareth Bale?

Is it because he said he wants to go there?

Is it because of the amount of money being offered?

I don't understand the narrative being thrown out that because a player wants to play for another club that we have to bow down to this request.

We didn't with Modric so why in this instance.

What is the difference between Luka Modric and Gareth Bale?

This is why I am so cynical about the whole thing,

To be fair Val, speculation is all we have to go off.

The club in the past has come out to nip it in the bud (see Modric, summer 2011).

The silence fuels the speculation, uncertainty and therefore our concerns.

The silence from Levy has moved the price on Bale from circa 50m earlier in window to circa £90m now - and still nothing definite.

He has made his position clear since the end of the season - but everyone has a price and in business and sport you have to re-evaluate. If the player himself changes strategy then a re-think is automatically required.

What he and AVB have to consider is whether our over-dependence on one player can be offset by a sale at an inflated price whilst bringing in 3 or even 4 quality players?

Or will keeping a player who may be dis-illusioned for one more season, with a couple of additions, be more beneficial long term.

Whilst their silence may fuel speculation it has as yet not done any harm. We have to believe that all will turn out well, even if concerned.

and anyway - we all know whats going on thanks to La Marca and Twitter.............

We may well be selling but don't see why we should have to announce it if we aren't ready to do so.

Perhaps we do want to do other deals first. Or perhaps, we might decide not to sell if those deals don't happen.

Whatever, you don't show your hand too early
