This is what I've been thinking about.

But what will really fry your brain is....we'll never know the real, excuse the pun, timing. Yes you can cite when the speculation went into overdrive but I've got a horrible feeling that Soldado will be the big signing in terms of replacing Bale - well his goals etc

Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted with Soldado...but yesterday I thought it was in addition to Bale.

This 50 million we were told about won't bear fruit I'd imagine.

IMO I don't think this is the case (spending bale money early). The Burt sell to buy thing just doesn't stack up with me.

Irrespective of whether we believe the money from Joe Lewis or not we have the massive increase in TV revenue (most of which can't go on wages) and if the Moutinho/Leandro bids were to be believed we have a bit of transfer kitty carried forward too.

Then pair that up with Burt admitting he was told Bale would stay until recently and it just doesn't stack up.

How could we be spending Bale money early on Paulinho, Chadli and bidding for Benteke and Soldado BEFORE this media frenzy turned bales head and changed the game?

Disclaimer: I realise this is Spurs and we do tend to net spend but everything points to a clear spend this year, look at Norwich's spending spree for example!

The silence from Levy has moved the price on Bale from circa 50m earlier in window to circa £90m now - and still nothing definite.

He has made his position clear since the end of the season - but everyone has a price and in business and sport you have to re-evaluate. If the player himself changes strategy then a re-think is automatically required.

What he and AVB have to consider is whether our over-dependence on one player can be offset by a sale at an inflated price whilst bringing in 3 or even 4 quality players?

Or will keeping a player who may be dis-illusioned for one more season, with a couple of additions, be more beneficial long term.

Whilst their silence may fuel speculation it has as yet not done any harm. We have to believe that all will turn out well, even if concerned.

and anyway - we all know whats going on thanks to La Marca and Twitter.............

I disagree with a lot of this. The notion of 3 or 4 quality players, the disillusioned player and the damage done bits in particular.

I understand why you've said it, and the reasoning behind your thoughts, but I disagree.

We may well be selling but don't see why we should have to announce it if we aren't ready to do so.

Perhaps we do want to do other deals first. Or perhaps, we might decide not to sell if those deals don't happen.

Whatever, you don't show your hand too early
That's exactly what i'm saying. The lack of any statement makes it seem that we're selling. I would have expected a denial or statement that he's staying by now if that were the case.

That's a fair point.

However we are assuming the media frenzy turned his head. They've been tapping him up for months. Zidane started it months ago.

Exactly. The fact that BT Sport is starting to remove him from advertising is telling too.

Not a problem - because I haven't agreed with a thing you've said either.

That's what makes it all so entertaining.

It doesn't have to be obviously desperate rhetoric like we hear from so many clubs... Something like

'Gareth is contracted to us for another 3 years, he's an extremely vital player for us and he has shown last season what he is capable of. We believe he will only continue to get better. With that being said we aren't looking to sell him at any point in the future as he's an important part of our plans, especially not at the prices being touted.'

Simple, yet invites Perez into going even more bid crazy as we'd be making him look small time to everyone.

Jesus, I need a hobby - writing ghost speeches for the bald leader, is this what my life has become?

I'd be over the moon if we finished the window with:

Soldado
Morata
Lamela
Chadli
Bernard
Paulinho
Coentrao
Chiriches

But I'm easy to please.

I don't think you have to be Sherlock Holmes to work out that everybody in the club had been told be Bale and his people that he was staying for at least one more year. Something changed in Hong Kong, we can only surmise what it is, I assume it was Real giving him the "now or never" ultimatum, and he has had his head turned.

But as I keep asking,
Modric head was turned , we kept him a further year
why is Bale a special case?

At the moment that's the only solid info I have. I have been trying to get some confirmation on the Bale situation but as I said in my thread, that seems impossible at the moment. I wouldn't like to call it either way to be honest.

Cheers,

M

True that's something we'll never truly know. Maybe the company line for this was 'spend to convince Bale of our ambition' when DL knew it was spending the bale money up front. Conspiracy theory though!

From all the information made available to us however from itks and journos such as Stobart/Lipton/Burt everything does suggest things have only changed very recently. Seems the most realistic scenario to me taking everything into consideration.
