The thing is my friend that those clubs would have replaced them with the same caliber players. And that is why they get 4th every year...we dont.

Liverpool and Everton get fourth every year? Really?

And who were the like-for-like players that Arsenal replaced RvP, Fabregas, Viera and Campbell (to name but four) with?

yeah so we missed the chance the steal a march on these clubs

you don't think Holtby by himself could be the man that connects the dots between the midfield and Defoe or Adebayor? Are we not a better team with him then a month ago?

We paid 1.5 for a starter. Arsenal just paid around £10 million for a LB who probably will take a bit of time before he starts and gets replaced by Kieran Gibbs.

One thing I think we can all agree on is, I DO NOT want to hear any more links or ITK about Damiao! Levy let him stay in Brazil and don't even try for him anymore.

Wonder what Bentley is up to this morning? We really are going to be stuck with him until his contract ends

Play him in the Europa league and stop playing Bale every game in every competition as he's going to burn out by early March. Christ he even started against Coventry!

I can't believe we actually sold Jenas.

Sold. Like, not even a loan.

Amazing. That's made my window.

That you allowed yourselves to get excited about us potentially signing a striker is no-one's fault but your own.

Holtby is going to be quality.

I swear I thought I had dreamed that when I woke up this morning and instantly linked it to the liquor...all was not lost :)

I actually feel remarkably upbeat. Its exciting when new players come in and I think most get carried away and just want anything come the end.

Holtby is a great signing.............no doubt about that. I'm not sure out strikers are up to the job though. Not on current form anyway

We sit 4th in the league with the squad we have.
We are fighting for 3rd or 4th.
We are only competing against Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton.
We only have to be better than 2 of them.
Arsenal have only signed a left back.
Everton have only signed a defender from the mighty Barnsley
Chelsea have only signed Demba Ba.

What's the panic, all is basically as it was before in our little mini league.

We at least had one striker that was contributing something early in the season at the moment we have none.
Dembele was bossing things for the first half of the season now he seems off form and/or injured
Sandro played for us in the first half of the season. Teams used to give up just looking at him.
We have a thin squad now...
We're one injury to Bale or Lennon away from losing most of our forward threat.
Ditto Parker - he gets injured again and we're back to Livermore for DM duties. He was bad early part of the season. Very bad.

On the positive side, Holtby looks good and fingers crossed Ade comes back from the ACN in some form.

Until I let the whole 'we are getting Leandro' stuff get to me I had resigned myself to being content with Holtby, now I'm over the Leandro stuff I'm back to being content.

What a great bunch of really knowledgeable, interesting, football loving people this site draws in! It's a shame that we didn't sign Leandro and it's sad in its way that Jenas has gone, but I feel very happy to know that in August, I can come back here and go through the same mad experience with the same magnificent bunch of football loving people (er... that's you lot in case you're not aware of who I'm banging on about ;)). Spurs are obviously the greatest team in the world, but people who just love football also come here to enjoy the mad ride (Toela65 springs to mind - about time you converted innit mate? ;)), so don't be too sad, it's not all bad. Take consolation from the fact that we are fourth, Ade will come good now that Holtby is here and that Leandro is still the greatest Spurs legend that has never played for the Club! o_O

Debatable... and certainly not at first for sure. but if you have a strong enough squad do you even have a starting 11?! Sure some positions/players will remain mostly unchanged, but the game is about rotation and adaptability. Not blindly playing the same way week in and week out.

Man Utd completely changed their tactics and personnel around to face us and almost walked away with a smash and grab. Had they played their home style we would likely have murdered them.

But i agree the fees were ridiculous. Especially Willian... but then we say that and then want over 40m for Bale in the summer, so in the end... horses for courses.

The question I wonder is IF Bale is 99% leaving and IF Willian was seen as a good player to replace him, why didn't we find the cash (if we could have... a lot of ifs I know)... Get him in now, learn to adapt and then replace Bale in summer being able to hit the ground running.

Just a thought. Suggests to me Bale out isn't as nailed on as some people think.

I'll give you Negredo and maybe Diame but I don't think Hooper Belhanda or even Sneijder (fitness reasons) would get more than 30 minutes for a month. Especially with the earning your spots with AVB. Holtby is likely to be thrown in there as a necessity then the others.

We are definitely more flexible with Holtby then any other option out there. We can slot him right into the 2 or 3 in the 4-2-3-1. Can play in the 3 in the 4-3-3. 4-4-2 can play and cover wing atleast as well as Siggy can.

And I just don't think there's anyway Bale is leaving. Madrid isn't paying 40m for a backup or a guy who can take minutes away from Ronaldo. The guy is in battle with Messi for Calendar Goals year in year out he won't ever rest unless he's injured. Bale's not consistent enough from the right to move there yet. Marcelo does a fine job at LB and Bale won't switch back to LB he already looks disinterested in defense half the time already. Don't think Barca is in for him and he's not moving to any other team unless it's City United Madrid or Barca.

Isn't all this disappointment just a result of the extremely hyped deadline day? Hadn't it been such a big deal and if it wasn't for all the "Levy Time"-talk I don't think we'd be this down today.

Looking at our rivals for 4th and what they've gotten this January it's not very impressive.

Arsenal bought a cover for an injured left back.
Everton got who?
Liverpool got Sturridge

I consider Chelsea pretty much nailed on for 3rd and they have strengthened with Ba, that's for sure.

We bought a potentially world class creative, flexible and exciting midfielder, German international and U21 Captain. Out of the teams we are competing with - Pool, Everton and Arsenal, we've strengthened the most IMHO.
I just don't understand the "Levy Time" horseshit that people were on about here. What has he done on the last day of a transfer window. Signed Van der Vaart, Saha, Dempsey. What about the players he got rid of on the last day of transfer window. I am still raging so will post later but seriously anyone that thinks "lets just forget about it and move on" needs to wake up. If thats your attitude then don't be pissed off when the players lose and think fuck it there's always next week

So the roller coaster ride ends, just five months to wait for the next one.

Holtby could turn out to be the best bit of transfer window business of the lot. I would have loved a class striker but the players who would really improve us are going for ridiculous money plus wanting impossible wages. If AVB is saying he only wants players who will make us better then good for him. I know we also need squad depth but in most area I believe we have that. Sure we are short of the world class players needed to win the league but if we get them they will only move on anyway.
