lol loads of cussing Adebayor over the last few days because he wouldn't leave and today he could be our best striker - want to say unbelievable but unfortunately ....

A leopard never changes it's spots etc. when has Adebayor ever performed once he was settled at a club with a long contract ? Hopefully things will change but I will be surprised.

We did really well this summer and have strengthened considerably, the only real downsides are losing Bale and not being able to get the other players we wanted

It seems pretty clear we wanted Willian and this time were really close, maybe we could have tied it up sooner, maybe it was unavoidable. I'm wondering if hearing of Willian's possible availibility might have cost us getting Bernard. I can see the logic of switching attention to the more proven and experienced player but having failed to get him it makes you think Bernard could have been a great alternative

Coentrao another target that it seems we tried for but who didn't want to come. Arguably we should have been more aware that he wasn't that keen and targetted elsewhere but we may have genuinely felt we would get him

Had we got those two positions sorted as well it would have been brilliant but you can't always get every position you want to strengthen sorted in one window

I think striker wise having signed Soldado we wanted to get rid of Ade (or possibly JD) before seriously getting too deep into discussions with another striker and maybe that's why there were few real links to strikers, again fair enough

The only position I felt needed strengthening that doesn't appear to have been considered this window is right back and maybe AVB wants to give Walker a longer chance to see if he can start to improve and become a footballer rather than an athlete

What's important is that we look to strengthen these areas in January unless any of the current players can convince over the coming months, we cant afford to rest on our laurels and think the job is pretty much done. Even if we address two of the remaining 4 positions we need to address come January we will be stronger still and the squad will get a nice mid season boost. If we finish the job it will really make this window be a major step up for us

You're missing the point....which is that the Bale that left was unrecognisable to the Bale that arrived.

100% spot on, and i think that the price that Levy paid for Chadli reflects his current ability and all round game. I do however see a player who could become a very good left sided player, has a good football brain and and is young enough to learn. I feel sure that AVB and Baldini also see a bright future for him as well.

How the fuck anyone can compare him the Bale on today is beyond me though.

I rest my case M'Lud................again.

2010 Team (MOST appearances)

Someone please explain to me how in three short years we have gone from the team above to the present day proposed starting eleven of:

Lloris

Paulinho
Sandro
Chadli
Lamela
Soldado

Please explain why we are so FUCKED after this transfer window!

I think someone said that AVB was 100% sold on Bernard. We also wouldn't have heard of Willian's possible availability. It was totally out of the blue. Complete change of the direction from the owner.

I also thought we would get Coentrao. He wanted out and for a while we looked to be his only option. He wasn't keen so he decided to wait for a better option. Very nearly got what he wanted. I wonder if he's regretting not getting out when he had the chance.

Again, all conjecture I'm afraid.

For what it's worth I believe it all came down to money on both deals. We would be naive to think that we could sneak in there, tie up the Willian deal without him (his agent) having a good idea of his own worth. At the end of the day they got what they wanted.

Coentrao I also believe would have probably come to us if we were prepared to shell out the £120k he wanted. I also suspect/believe that this is what ultimately scuppered any transfer to United. I do think he has an unrealistic opinion of his own value in this case. Good luck to the guy if he can get it though. Maybe he is correct and will go elsewhere or maybe he will not get much game time and put his WC place in jeopardy. It's his own bed as they say.

I don't know either of these things are true - just my own personal take (and reasoning) on it. We do have limits and I don't think we should break these, especially for a full back, even if it is an important position.

I just wanted to add my thanks to A&C, Rob and the rest of the mods for all of their hard work and patience (mostly). I have coughed up my £50 I promised for Bale leaving (Its been a hard couple of days), but I notice there are over 20,000 members on this site and what would you bastards all do if it went down heh? so can I suggest you all dig deep and cough up a fiver or so even a quid each would keep this place open for a very long while. If an old git like me, who was made redundant a few weeks ago can find his way to the donate button I am sure you young uns can. The price of a pint or two, just think about it.

As for my postmortem I will give that once I come back from a few days away and had chance to clarify a few things, probably at the weekend. I will warn you it might be a long one! Just one thing though for those muppets who think buying players is easy and the club should have bought so and so, look back at our history over the last 30 years or so and tell me when we bought 7 internationals in one go and when have we had such a strong squad?

My real message to you that are dissastisfied with this window is go and fucking support someone else, cos I don't want to be associated with muppets like you and i doubt that the club wants your support.

We should also remember that a lot of these Brazilians don't last long in Russia. Bernard could easily be available for next summer's window. {optimistic}

Really? Can't see that happening. Surely that would be a massive loophole to exploit!?
Yes I think man city did it with a keeper not so long back - it was seen as exploitation by some cause of their bribing power

Right, this net spend garbage;

If you went out and bought 7 royal gala apples for £1 and then sold your big shiny pink lady apple for £1, you would have spent £1 and received £1.

You would have a profit/deficit of £0, but you have still spent £1.

I personally love pink lady apples, but I'd gladly swap it for 7 royal gala apples. Because if my pink lady goes mouldy or a maggot gets to it, I have no apple. If one of my gala apples goes mouldy I still have 6 lovely apples left.

Rather than apples, how about if we compare balls?

If you have one big ball and replace it with seven smaller balls that make up the same size as your original BIG ball but your competitors (who had bigger balls than you in the first place) all have big balls and increase the size of their balls beyond yours then who will win the competition for the biggest balls?

But seriously, my point is that regardless of how much we received we still "spent" about £100m. Our rivals haven't spent more, they just haven't received as much.

And anyway, what if your big ball gets kicked into the neighbours garden and gets mauled by the Rottweiler? No ball.
