I started a monthly donation a few months ago. It wasn't my intention to at the time. I just thought I'd make a one off donation so I could feel like I've done my part in helping maintain the site, but when I was on PayPal there was a box to tick if I wanted to make my donation monthly and I thought, yeah, why not. It's only £5 a month, but that's £60 over the year and I know the site needs it.
I don't want to sound like a sanctimonious prick but I'm sure there are loads of long time regular users who could afford to donate £5 a month but don't. I know I didn't do it for a long time. At the end of the day I had to look at it like this; If SC shut down then what would I spend most of my working day doing? Work, that's what. So I look at it as by paying £5 per month it means I don't have to do so much work. Now that's well worth it.
