Townsend impressed me much more than McManaman during the run in. Townsend is a better dribbler, better passer and striker of the ball imo. If McManaman didn't have that really good game against City he wouldn't have half the hype surrounding him, whereas Townsend had a good game every time he played for QPR.

Opinions at the end of the day. I watched him more than just the City game I can tell you. For me a sign of a potential gem is someone who has that unpredictable way about them - and in a positive way I mean. I think he's very talented. Ok its premature to draw serious conclusions but its just my feeling that he'll have the bigger future.

So we are looking at singing McManaman. A player who has had half a dozen good games (in others opinion, not in mine) for a team who where relegated last season, has just signed a new contract at the beginning of the year, in a position we are already covered with in Lennon and Townsend and have good kids coming through in from the u21 and u18 teams.

This is totally not the type of singing we should be looking at. We should promote from within for squad players, we need to direct our limited resources at positions where we need big players. Marquee type singings. Important positions where we need to have the best available so we can keep up with, let alone push ahead of our nearest rivals.

No, no, no. Just fucking no. I am completely underwhelmed at this news. Not because he isn't a big name player or a Johnny foreigner if you will but because it says to me that we are looking for bargains rather then to balance our squad.

There are so many things wrong with this I just despair. I really do. I can'not be arsed to explain further because I am utterly deflated that we are setting our sights so low. We do not need this guy in any way shape or form. Right midfield is not a priority. We aren't even meant to be wanting to play with traditional wingers anymore are we? I thought we are looking at moving to AVB's preferred 4-3-3? Where does he come in to in that?! I would expect him to have a season of performing well in the PL before we went in for him. If we are gambling on someone then we should be going after a cheap foreign target where the outlay wont be so heavy. Taking a gamble on a PL (OK now Championship but still) player means paying a heavy premium.

NO.

If I had hair I would be pulling it out.

We need an upgrade on Lennon, not back up.

Exactly.

Next season we should have ample options out wide but the remit has to be to improve on Lennon which requires someone who's technically gifted, intelligent, finds pockets of space and is much more of a threat outside the box.

That player is an Isco but I'll gladly take a Bernard.

What did he say about Bernard ?

Just that he is one we are looking at, there was also some quotes attributed to the Palermo (I think) president about how they are interested but he says there is also the English club Tottenham involved... or something along those lines (Not the Vickery interview).

I'm going to get neg'd to fuck for this but Townsend, from what 'little' I have seen of him, is the epitome of 'unpredictable'. Sometimes I've found myself wondering if he knows what he's doing, or going to do!!

I can't say if he's good enough for Spurs, but he would fit into a team playing 433.
For Wigan he has played as a wide forward and has scored cutting in from both left and right side.

This smells like Bentley all over again. If we singed this fella that is what would happen. He would be a wage drain on the club for the totality of his contract, or at least until we sold him. Where does he fit in to our squad and what we need? He isn't an upgrade, he would be cover AT BEST. In fact, he would be third choice in the pecking order of our current right sided players if he was to join. Maybe lower if any of the kids made the leap up.

Total waste of time, money, effort, squad place and is a dent in showing our big players the clubs ambition. Maybe if we had done our important business and there were a few quid spare then I could understand it, a little gamble for a reasonable price, no more then £3/4m. But anything other then that and well, I don't know.

BTW, great thing on BBC2 about The Eagles right now.

Very true, Wigan play with a front 3

How do you know that lol? If AVB wanted him and the price wasn't too bad I wouldn't be adverse, he looks really talented to me. I would back AVB's judgement for sure given my own opinion from watching him.

Sorry for bringing other non-ITK names into the hat but what happened to Ganso as we were linked with him in the past and was seemingly the next big thing to come out of Brazil yet it appears he never fulfilled his early promise although I hasten to add my knowledge of Brazilian football is slight.

Point is, is Bernard just the latest 'fad' or does he possess that star quality to make it in Europe?

It looks like another striker is about to fall by the wayside. It is being reported that Villa is on £130,000 a week. Can you honestly see DL paying those sort of wages to a 31 year old?

I think he would but now levy will try and get the transfer fee down even lower probably like he did with Adebayor but this time it probably won't work, I don't think it would upset the players if David villa come on them wages provided bale is paid the most I wouldn't mind what's he on tbh

But then I'm not our bald leader

Clever structuring of the deal & include performance enhanced contract, ie goal bonus, games completed, CL qualification etc etc? I've got no idea what it involves, to run a football club BUT surely it's not too difficult to make up for a wage deficiency vie a few bonus' in the contract?

Santos sold him to Sau Paulo in September of last year

Bernard is as good and has the potential to be better than Oscar, someone who we also wanted to sign.

Sounds good to me although I reckon Oscar will provide more consistently high performances next year if given the opportunity under Mourinho.
