I
Im all for selling if we can get someone better but untill then i rather keep him
I know what you mean but we have to really up our game and take a make bold decisions and make the move happen. This is not something we are noted for at present but I am really optimistic about the future and I'm really sure it will get even better if we keep the foundations of the club now in place and build on it! (a new stadium will help this)

I agree with most of what you say. Ade and defoe are both good strikers IMO and it will be hard to get anyone in who is better, in our price range, and who wants to come

I think Ade is a gonner no matter what. The rumours of bad attitude etc. I can't see AVB wanting him around. Deadly though he may be when on top of his game, AVB must know whether he can break him or not. Similar to Cantona at ManU. The strong rumours of Besiktas coupled with the ridiculous wages tell me he's off.

Defoe's a different proposition. For too long he has lacked maturity to become one of the true worldy strikers, his impetuous shooting from everywhere and complete lack of understanding the offside rule drive me mad. However, his control isn't bad, his shooting is rather good and his overall positioning is (as long as onside) is good, plus his work rate is high. Its his general game play and ability to think correctly under pressure that he lacks.

I think AVB sees potential in Defoe and could easily coach him to be a lot more rounded player. As someone pointed out Villa isn't a 'lump it up and make it stick type striker', so AVB is seeking a cuter number 9 that can interchange with Bale and a.n.other. Playing 3 up front will suit Defoe massively, I can see him getting a lot of space in tight corners.

I'm hoping Defoe's age, and realisation that he needs a stellar season to get in the world cup place coupled with AVB's coaching will raise his game to where it should be. I'm still hoping for a signing up front, but doubt that if we do they will start the season, I see one in and Ade out with Defoe starting the season up front.

As i've said elsewhere the £20m + bids we had rejected for Moutinho, Remy and Kenywyne f-ing Jones prove otherwise...

No they don't!

Every time we have supposedly bid 20+ it has miraculously fallen through! Once or twice sure but 5, 6 or every single time, it's almost just lip service . He's never bid 20+ when it's been the actual amount needed to do the deal!

It shouldn't take four days (if Betenke is in this country) to phone Learner, make a bid, counter bid, have Danny Boy play the Star Spangled Banner (or have it sung by Kenny Chesney) get the medical done and dusted cut Learner a cheque and then have Levy and AVB appear at WHL with Betenke holding up a Defoe out Spurs shirt with his name on it.

Four day plan.............no sweat!

Where's that optimistic rating when you need it!

It was down to our so called good strikers that we didn't get 4 th last season , if we don't improve our front two it will all be down to Gareth again

Defoe usually starts the season on fire for the first few months, then is average for the rest.
Maybe we should loan him out every jan and just use him for the first half of the season
And to prove your point, he scored two last night. See - starting the season on fire again. Oh, err, it was against Brentford. Still, one can hope.

No just a striker though we need another creative force in the team or this season will br the same as the last

We bid 20m for Jones and it was rejected. I have posted the link proving this elsewhere in the thread.

This is wrong thread for this discussion so I will stop now.

I think u are selling our midfield 3 short here! Obvs sandro will sit and hold but Paulinho and Dembele can/will create and make space for our front 3. From what i hear Avb is aiming to create a team very similar to chelsea 05/06 season.
Worked well then!

Don't really see that midfield being much more creative than last years tbh, dembele plays with his head down and doesn't release the ball at the right times imho.

Wasn't thst team renowned for being boring? We always hear how the style of football wasn't entertaining enough for abramovich

Sandros injury, Friedel #1 for awhile, Dembele carrying hip injury etc....

there's more than 1 reason we didn't finish top 4, fact is when we beat the arse we had it in the bag then we collectively blew it as a team
