Made that point before makes you wonder what would happen if we didn't get CL football or the TV deal never came in, would the stadium have suddenly collapsed, I doubt Levy would have been that reckless.

Same as you I think it is an excuse.

You don't read the financials do you? If you want to know exactly where the money goes have a gander but please try to understand them.

"Mr. Levy is not the easiest in negotiations, but I must say he was very straight with us," Gunter Jacob, OM's newly appointed sporting director, told media on Thursday. "I worked well with him. It was difficult, but I'm happy that we were finally able to complete the transfer."

I'm 27 and whilst I'm certainly aware of our history pre-90s, I didn't experience it. I have only Sugar as a comparison, and it's only fair that Levy is assessed on the club he took over at the time, not 20/30 years beforehand.

If we were winning European silverware when Levy took over then certainly I'd view his tenure in another light. But when we did get in to the UEFA Cup (a big deal then) we couldn't scrape past a second rate German side (my first WHL Euro night...we won 1-0 in the home leg) in those days, let alone come close to actually winning it.

We need to have some perspective and remember that nobody expected us to be finishing in the top 4 before we started actually doing it. It was a closed shop. We were expected to stay at the level of Everton, VIlla, Newcastle - examples of how badly established PL teams can be run. That's the level we were at when he took over. We didn't have a one-off wonder season, or get lucky. We didn't do a Leeds and spunk a load of money on top players to enjoy some fleeting success. We built something and maintained it, using fairly limited resources. Now we're talked about in the same breath as Liverpool and Arsenal.

Regardless of the merits of finishing top 4 v winning a cup, Levy has achieved really significant things whilst he's been here, and will leave a truly lasting legacy in many ways. He'll go down extremely favourably in the club's history. People will remember Champions League football, the new stadium, the training ground, beating Chelsea in the cup final in 2008, Gareth Bale, Dele Alli, Harry Kane...they won't remember missing out on Joao Moutinho in 2012, or not signing a striker in 2015. And hopefully, they'll be remembering a couple more trophies too.

Love this post.

I always thought Levy and ENIC had taken us as far as they could and it was time for a change. But now, I think it wasnt so much a board problem as it was a coaching issue. Pochettino has taken us up a level and has such a young side. I've certainly been a harsh critic of both Poch and the ownership but they have made me eat my words and right now, I dont know how I'd feel about being sold and distrupting what we have going for us. Poch is a very loyal person and is a believer in starting a project and seeing it out. The only reason we have Poch is because Saints got rid of Cortese. If Levy and Lewis sold, I dont think he'd stick around much longer.

Meh, in 6 weeks you'll be suggesting he should be sacked again.

So next time we lose or have a bad game....maybe even 2 in a row.... you are going to remain loyal to Poch?

At the end of the day, Levy has a line past which his influence on the actual on-pitch performances ceases to exist. The biggest influence he has is on employing the right coaching, scouting and analytical staff to make things happen on the pitch.

We don't sell our best players. It annoys me when people say we are a selling club because we sold Bale and Modric. We received ridiculous fees for those players from the biggest club in the world. It's like calling Man Utd a selling club because they sold Ronaldo to Real Madrid. Everyone is a selling club on the right terms. But Levy does not sell our players and if they force the issue and it is a true European giant he makes sure we get a huge fee.

The progress off the pitch in terms of the training facilities, youth recruitment and development, the professionalism and sponsorship deals and stadium is undeniable.

Let's wait and see if the stadium is built first. I mean it looks to all intents and purpose a football stadium but what if it's not? Where's the proof? What if he's building a giant mausoleum for his death? A giant frozen section for the adjacent Sainsbury's? I think a lot of people will look very silly if this is the case.

I think the stadium will be fine, he won't let the builders get away with BS workmanship.

Wasn't there a poster who swore ENIC wouldn't build a stadium & sell as soon as they got planning permission?

There was more than one.

That was the case across many forums with many stating it would never been built . It was always an odd assertion given that it this was central behind their purchase of he club and central to their objective either this.

As for Levy well he is quite clearly one of the most talented in his field and he is arguably the club's biggest asset. What I never understood is that so much unwarranted criticism was levelled at him ( when in fact much of the fault was always with the club and its capacity) but his biggest failing largely goes unnoticed.
