I have been on 'Sell Sanchez' camp for a while now. We needed that CB but we didnt get it. Fuming on that.
But unlike most here, I am more than fine with selling Sanchez even now.

I know there is a risk and all. This season for me, is still a season where we experiment and get it right.
If Ange is willing to add Phillips in match day squad, thats ok for me.

If Sanchez plays and we concede 2 goals a game (which has been the norm)...and if Phillips plays we concede 2 per game (when he is in learning mode) whats the difference ?

Only good point is, hopefully Phillips keeps learning and able to do well.

Colwill was 19 last season , Joe Gomez was 18 when he made PL debut, Phil Jones played 2 PL seasons by 19. There are more examples like this.

Ideally we should have signed another competent and capable CB to be able to not only deputise for either vdV or Romero but actually push them for starts as well which would also allow us to have loaned out Phillips for first team minutes.

I'm sure this will be remedied come January time now with the flexibility we have now Sanchez is departing but will be fascinating if Phillips and even Dorrington manage to accrue some minutes in the first team.

Davies isn’t that suitable, in Ange’s system it requires fast defenders good at one against one. Davies is an ok player but this isn’t his skillset. Philips might be closer but that is a huge risk. Sanchez is the closest we have to someone who can do this even if he is far from perfect. I just don’t see the reason to gamble the squad like this.

Ideally of course you'd have someone fast. But I think we're oversimplifying things a lot, when we say some of this stuff. Ben is good enough on the ball, positionally is strong, is a decent defender. We'd have less recovery pace, sure, but he's not incapable of playing in this system. And if we continue to dominate the ball, it's also not like you're asking him to defend for 90 minutes.

The key part to all of this is that Ange has sanctioned both players leaving the club. If he’s happy with it, I am.

Yea but the likes of Kane forced their way in the team, this is basically having to throw someone in ready or not. It might work or it might be a total cock up. Why take the risk.

I suspect this is as much about the project that Ange is trying achieve as the financial side. Moving away from the old approach and those who are not invested or capable of the new approach. Removing the distraction to focus on what we are trying to build. There is clearly a gamble to it but it feels like a focus on a longer terms strategy to me.

The main thing with Ange’s is not just the high line it’s how the full backs push when on the ball. This means the CB’s have to be great one vs one as the flank gets exposed, this isn’t something that Davies is known for and he didn’t look that solid in pre season playing CB in this system. VDV on the other hand looks built to be a player in this sytem.

We bought VDV, got Philips for youth and went for Kelly, all big, quick physically dominate CB’s. So it’s clear their is a type of CB that we need. I think it’s more likely we will gamble Philips if VDV or Romero get crocked.

Nah - Kane made his mark in Poch's first season playing Europa and League Cup and also off the bench, and then "forced" his way past Soldado and Adebayor. Not a high bar, but aside from a cameo in goal, Kane was showing he deserved to be starting.

Kelly is a LCB though - so more likely a VdV back-up, while Phillips would be a Romero back-up.

We'll be playing one game a week almost every week until January. We don't need a massive squad and we have to take the chances we get to trim it.

It’s a massive risk.

Given the way we operate, there’s every chance we won’t get a CB in quickly when the January window opens. Clubs will know we’re short and Levy can’t seem to stomach doing deals when he lacks bargaining leverage and can’t get good value.

Let’s hope it doesn’t cost us.
