This has to be the dumbest international break - just after the WC, players have barely had time to reacclimate with the club, and they are called up again.

Southgate should have called in more fresh faces, given the WC players who played a lot a bit of an extended break. Poor player management imo

Scheduling is down to UEFA and their new toy. Whilst they have (sort of) addressed the meaningless aspect of international friendlies, they have predictably done nothing about the scheduling of the matches themselves, which is a bigger problem imo. Re: Squad, there are 5 new faces. Sessegnon, Foden, Sancho, etc will get their call up soon enough, but think he is right to stick with the majority of the WC squad for now. This is the english international football team after all. Not some Sunday league set up where being semi-sober and having your own socks guarantees you a place in the team.

We've got a competitive fixture, it's his job to take it seriously.

Right - but you have to manage for the long-term - not the short-term. The long-term goals are winning Euro 2020, and Qatar 2022.

Now is the time to start bedding in new players with the national team. Get them used to the program. Let the national team coaches get a look at the players close up. Let those players taste a bit of what they are chasing, and set the expectations with those players for when they go back to the clubs.

UEFA is to blame for setting up the Nations League to start right now, instead of the next break. But managers still have to manage players - and over-using players just as they are getting into club form, is a good way to burn them out over the course of a year or 2.

I am not saying all the WC players should sit out - clearly players like Dier and Rose did not play much in the summer - now is a good chance to give them minutes.

If you are saying that England can not win without their normal starting XI - then England have bigger problems than burning the players out.

That happens anyway since St Georges was opened. All the age group teams train together, inc the seniors, and there is a clear pathway from age groups to the seniors. This was not the case formerly. Southgate, of all people, will also be aware of what is coming through due to his u21 role and knowledge of the "system".

Your 2nd point (re: UEFA) is 100% correct though. Again, imo.

We already had one of the youngest squads at the world cup and our two oldest players have just retired. Southgate has a policy of giving youth a chance. He'll call young players up when he feels the time is right.

So is this a friendly or what. I can’t quite work it out. There’s no prestige for winning this new competition is there?

Lovely goal, I thought Shaw over run the ball but great pass in the end.

Probably one of the best England goals I’ve seen since euro 96. Passed through the Spanish all the way up the pitch.

That's a good run and pass from shaw. Quite unbeliavble that the spanish defence let that ball go all the way through
