No doubt Mainoo will be a brilliant talent but the fact Southgate et al have fast tracked him into the England team whilst completely ignoring Loftus-Cheek speaks volumes about how clueless the squad selections are.
They fast tracked him because he's also eligible for Ghana but I agree about him ignoring Loftus-Cheek.

This game also shows just how much we rely on Kane, we've been absolutely nothing up front.
It's also the set up. Foden, probably the best player in and around the box we have, nowhere to be seen this game. For example.

That and putting players like Dunk on....

But yeah there is a massive kane shaped hole up top too.

Getting rid of the cliques is the one positive Gareth has done, and well done fornthat. Everything else England have done under him has been in spite of him.

I really do wonder what a great international manager could have done or do with this generation of England talent.
Almost all international managers are shit though. Even France has never looked that good under Deschamps, just been barely good enough to see off worse opposition

We don't create enough for our striker. Kane would've been just as starved tonight.

Kane's hold up play would've been very useful here, no English player can hold the ball up like he can.

Also, his ability to drop deep and pick a pass would've been valuable too.

Yeah Watkins hasn't been great even when he had had it and poor effort with his chance early on.

Looked worse with the subs though. Rashford working hard to be the next Sterling

Southgate’s entire tenure has solely relied on Kane performing. It’s pretty clear when there’s no Kane or if he’s having a rare bad game, the rest of the team have no idea what they’re supposed to do.

All these subs screamed ‘players on the bubble’ of the squad, to me. Hopefully Maddison gets decent amount of time against Belgium

So glad I put myself through that just for my lad, I’ll have to remind him of the sacrifices I made for him for the next twenty years.
Says it all when you’ve got a Brazilian B team rock up and half the players I’ve never heard of them

I had a nap instead, timed my wake up to perfection… only had to endure the 4 mins of injury time 🤣

I just don't see progress under Southgate anymore.
We’ve massively underperformed for Southgate’s entire tenure. The World Cup and Euros runs were solely down to fortuitous draws. The second England play a half decent side, he reverts to sticking everyone behind the ball and hoping Kane can hold the ball up and create something. He should’ve gone after we lost to a pretty rank average Italy team at the Euros.

Feel for any fan who's bought a ticket for a prestige match against Brazil and ended up watching England playing with slightly less energy than an over-50's game of walking football, featuring Peter Kay at left-back.
