The impact of the atmosphere on yesterday's game

Sitting at the game yesterday, i couldnt help but notice that, epecially in the first half, the fans were somewhat in a state of continual frenzy, something that ive not seen in 15 years of being a season ticket holder.

The causes of this are fairly obvious; with our fantastic start, there was clearly a degree of expectation/hope that we'd get something out of the game, something that i personally believe was fuelled largely by the media who were really hyping us up in the build-up to the game. With the ground already rocking at kick-off, the atmosphere obviously reached fever pitch when Defoe scored, and id challenge anyone not to have been caught up in the heat of the moment and gone, quite frankly, ballistic-it was amazing.

However, after that moment, expectation seemed to get the better of us supporters and i found that the atmosphere became extremely hostile, especially towards the referee who was admittedly having a shocker. The problem was though that this seemed to transfer itself to the players, who looked to get very panicky in possession, most notably Palacios and Huddlestone, the two guys that we most needed to be relaxed on the ball, and to a lesser extent Bassong and King. For me, this was the reason why we played so many diagonal balls to Crouch-the players were panicking on the ball and sought an easy out-ball at all times.

Im obviously not blaming us fans for the defeat, im just more interested to see if anyone felt the same way, as the atmosphere yesterday was something that i cant recall ever seeing before in terms of the intensity and the way that the fans were reacting so furiously to any decision or foul, whether it had been serious, niggly or just petty.

No difference to normal from where I was standing, every game the ref gets abused as to the opposition.

Think we fans probably needed to be more vocal in supporting the team after Rooney scored the third, but understandably we kinda knew the writing was on the wall even with so long left.

But sometimes the players need to raise the fans rather than the other way round and they also looked like they knew the game was up.

I didnt like how the fans got annoyed so easily at us giving the ball away. Yes it was poor at times but we arent as good as some people think. Yesterday was a good reality check even though we could have got the game back to 2-2.

WHL is anything but hostile, its a lovely ground with a friendly non intimidating atmophere, perfect for opposition players and officials alike.

We should be hostile towards referees that give free kicks for dives that lead to goals, and don't book defenders for deliberate elbows, and give free kicks every time Man Utd want one...

Our possession was poor though, and quite unlike stats from the previous four matches in the premiership. As supporters who as a whole, can see this glaring omission from our game, it would manifest itself as frustration. I watched the game on tv but could still make an early opinion on how poor we were being made to play.

Totally agree with this post. The atmosphere was electric and contributed to our great start.

The ref killed us though. Every decision went against us in the first half to a beyond ridiculous extent. The free kick weren't a foul apparently, it didn't look it from the South Upper 120 yards away. Double whammy, Palacios booked and a goal.

Second half there were a few moments, but the 3rd killed the game. On that note, why did Hutton come on he is so bad, and not only was he poor on the goal, but we lost an opportunity to throw on another attacker.

The atmosphere at the lane is always electric, but then the referee is asking Man Utd players if it was a free kick or not it kind of ruins the game. I don't know how true it is, but aren't referees paid about £60K a year??? Surely we can get better refs then, this and the guy who ref'd the Birmingham game were dreadful!

The atmosphere at Spurs is far from electric, it has its moments like the 2-1 against the Chavs, the Sevilla game, the 5-1 against Arse and a few others over the last few years. But in the main it's a very pleasant non intimidating environment for the opposition to play in and for officials not to feel any pressure to be a homer.

Has been electric every game I've been to this season, although I am in the shelf where the atmosphere is better than other parts of the ground

It depends, if you go to the west stand then its not, if you go to the park lane/shelf it electric.

Where I am Paxton upper, it is normally quite quite, but today it was very good!

I have to say after the Anderson goal the singing was quite timid, plus everyone was standing in the South stand so no usual excuses.
