With the impeding Uefa Financial Fair Play Rule and the goal of this being to eliminate excessive spending which is doing irreparable harm to the future financial health of clubs; teams will need to start being self sufficient during the 2012/13 season.
Article 58 of the rules, “Break even requirement,” lists the regulations that clubs must adhere to, and as it says clubs expenditure must break even with income.
Although on the surface it looks a good idea but is it really? Does it not give the bigger clubs chance to spend big NOW and make the difference between the top teams and smaller teams so big that after the rule comes into play it will merely make no difference? Yes it might stop the money men from abroad coming over and doing a Chelsea and Man City; but is it not too late?
Yesterday saw Chelsea and Liverpool overspend on players. Is Andy Carroll worth £35 million?? No, but the fact that after next season you can’t overspend means clubs now only have 2 windows to buy players and make sure their club has the players to maintain their status for the future. So what will we see in the next window? More BIG spending by the top clubs so when the rule is introduced they are well equipped. They won’t be able to spend it after next season; so they have to spend it now. Man City have averaged over £50million in each window since the new owners have come but that will HAVE to stop; So instead maybe they will have to spend £200million in two windows and then when the rules are introduced, buy players more sparingly, replacing the odd player here and there within their means. Does that not explain the inflated fees paid for players in this window.
So what does this mean for spurs? Yes we have missed an opportunity. Being in the champions league gave us scope to attract the top players that might not come if we fail to reach it again. But that’s gone and next time round we HAVE to spend big. We HAVE to bring in quality. We HAVE to keep Bale and Modric even if we are offered huge money. Otherwise we will fall behind.
I look at the squad and see Dawson; Bale; Thudd; Modric; VDV; Lennon as our main players and we have some other good players but we still need 4 or 5 top players (2 top strikers, top dm, top cb; top gk). Please Mr Levy look for reasons why teams are spending now and follow suit. We haven’t spent big in recent windows there must be money there. There needs to be money there and we can’t afford to sell our star players.
Again I will say that I think we have missed a big opportunity to get some quality players. But in my opinion the stadium, whether Stratford or not, will not define our future the next transfer window will.
Mr Levy, look at what you expect to spend over the next 5 years without the rule and spend it now before the rule is introduced. Maybe it will be £100+ million. Our motto is “To Dare is To Do” and this could be the biggest dare of all. But it will need to be made.
