Davor Suker was a bloody good player but he was coming to the end of his career when arsenal signed him.

The World Cup is not the best place to judge players for club football. A lot of players perform way above when it comes to international football.

Emi Martinez is not the guy we should be going for. He’s a very good penalty keeper, and does clearly love the big occasion, but he’s proven week in week out to be an average to below average goalkeeper. He makes sloppy errors, his positioning can be wild and he can be incredibly rash coming for high balls (sound familiar!).

The only difference between him and Hugo is Hugo is/was an absolutely elite shot stopper. Martinez is good at it. He’s just like Pickford, who always turns up for England but not the same at club level.

If we want to sign a keeper who’s the same age as Emi, an excellent penalty saver and elite at everything else, then Koen Casteels from Wolfsburg should be our target. He’s a monster.

Not saying it works now but are we not the OG when it comes to buying players off the back of a World Cup? Ossie/Ricky, Klinsmann…

Quiz time. We signed a player who had a breakthrough international tournament and then sold this player because he desperately wanted playing time ahead of another international tournament. Name the player.

My wife is Canadian, so I took notice of the Canadian team during the World Cup. Apart from Alphonso Davies, who would cost a fortune from Bayern, I was impressed by their winger, Tajon Buchanan, who'd currently with Club Brugge. Has already gained experience in this seasons Champions League, and he could turn out to be a bargain for someone. Only 23 years old too. One to watch methinks.

Will be keeping my eye on Livakovic going forward, he had an incredible World Cup, if he really is that good he would be the perfect replacement for Hugo.

I'm originally from Syracuse, New York where he played at the college, he's rapid! Brugge alternates between a 433 of sorts and a 352, so if he continues there he's gaining valuable experience in both a forward and wingback type roles. I definitely think Canada will be a force at the next WC. It's on mostly home soil, the squad they have will all be entering their primes and most will have this as an experience

Alexis Mac Allister looks a player, as does Moises Caicedo. We should just sign Brighton's recruitment team

I was pretty much thinking that this morning - how much money have they and will they make out of their outlay.. its nuts.

What we have to remember about these sorts of comments is that Brighton are buying these players to start immediately - they find these diamonds in the rough and use game time (a lot of game time) to polish them. They accept that they won’t be great players immediately and the club and fans are willing to give them time to develop.

We don’t have the same amount of leeway or game time available to polish these gems. For example, Juan Foyth - every time he had a dodgy game, wobble or mistake, he was jumped on and didn’t get a run of games. He went to Villarreal and has improved brilliantly, to where he’s part of a World Cup winning squad. Chelsea have seen issues like this on a much higher level considering they’ve sold 2 of the Premier League’s best ever in Salah and De Bruyne.

So whilst I’m envious of other teams ability to discover and develop rising stars, it’s not something that can be simplified into “we should copy their model”.

Great post but I think there should be more willingness to play players in where we don't have a sure-fire option in that position.

For me I'd like to see Spence given wayyyy more game time, because I know neither Doherty nor Royal are the one, so why not see if he might be.
People constantly badgering over buying a 'starting quality RWB' but then suggesting people who are either their own esoteric choices, or ludicrously expensive/wishful purchases, or have obvious red flags, all in the context of spending significant amounts of finite money that could go elsewhere.
