Btw, if he wasnt on Barca, he'd still be banned from football activites.

I doubt he would be. Not being able to train being upheld would have taken it into workers rights territory, and probably a strong legal challenge from Suarez' camp in relation to that. Letting him train but not play keeps the punishment within FIFA sanctioned competitions, where they get to have a say regarding who can compete.

If they are going to apply it to matches and not to 'any footballing activity' doesn't that mean it should apply from when matches actually start?

It started during the world cup!

Yeah and applied for one game.

Basically the whole idea of a duration rather than a number of games was ridiculous and only used because they tried to include this weird 'all footballing activity' clause. Now that's been removed it should be a number of games (one number for club and another for internationals).

He'll only miss two months of Barca's season and I simply don't see how that's enough for your third offence of biting another human.

Oh I agree, but I don't expect they can change the punishment now or they'd be going through this whole thing again (with the sentence probably suspended entirely whilst they do).

It isn't FIFA caving, it's the ruling of an independent court of arbitration (the Court of Arbitration for Sport, or CAS to be precise).

Not only that, but I can't help but feel that FIFA knew that he'd appeal and that something would be overturned, so they put the training ban in to prevent the playing ban being shortened on appeal.

will make debut v Real Madrid, game moved till day after his 4 month ban runs out

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) also told Barcelona that summer signing Suarez, 27, is free to play.
"Cas has confirmed to FC Barcelona that the Uruguayan's suspension will end at midnight on Friday 24 October," read a statement on the Catalan club's website.
"Therefore, clearing him to appear in his first official fixture for his new club, against none other than Real Madrid, should (coach) Luis Enrique opt to play him."
