To be fair, I like Maddison and do wish we'd pushed on with our interest. Pleaty recommendations always seem to come good (well, the reported ones) and the lad has stepped up to PL footy just fine. Anyway, Poch...
Typical Spurs. Could have had him at £2m from Coventry. Then £25m from Norwich, now he's already well out of our price range.

Some quotes from Sky Sports

"To win the Carabao Cup and be in the middle of the table in the Premier League I think today we are not talking how we are talking here. I think I was sacked a few years ago. With two or three Carabao Cups or FA Cups.

"If you don't finish how we have finished in the last three seasons and (win) the FA Cup, I don't know if Daniel (Levy, chairman) would have too much patience with me or is very nice to say, 'OK you're 10th in the Premier League' and give you a new contract."

I whole heartedly agree with this. Whilst it would be nice to win a domestic cup, their importance is at an all time low for the top 4-6 teams. They should never become the focus and result in a dip in league form. Winning the FA Cup would be lovely, but not if we finish outside the top 4.
Winning it and then going to Uzbezikstan the next season for the nophoper league isn't going to convince Eriksen and Alderwiereld to stay. It might even make Poch consider his options.

I never understand why fans get their noses bent out of shape by his comments, he's not saying he isn't going to try or doesn't want to win or will not take it seriously. Simply that winning a domestic cup won't suddenly crown us as a top team.

He goes on further to point out that Swansea won the league cup and Wigan the FA Cup and they're both in the championship now.

I feel like if most of us are honest, maybe not the older fans but us in our late 20s or younger its likely the main reason we want to win a domestic trophy is so rivals dont have that stick to beat us with.

It'll just shift to '1 cup in 10 years, no league title in over 50' or something similar, it's not going to stop it because they don't want to accept how much we have improved. Just need to brush it off IMHO, but I do agree.

Applies to us older fans as well...

I don't really care what other people say but I've only seen us win a couple of league cups. I want a parade with a proper trophy

That's fair, for me I'm not overly fussed about the F.A cup beyond that it'd be great for the players but I'd absolutely love to see us lift the Prem or Champions League.

I agree with Poch.

While I want to see us win trophies, seeing us improve as a team and competing in CL is more important.

I think Poch's comments just highlight how much of a job he's had on his hand and how well he's coped.

Compare that to someone like Mourinho, win at all costs, no building just win but potentially leave the club with unrest and turmoil. Whilst the objective is to win things, we all know that deep down had we won a couple of league cups and an FA Cup yet made no in-roads to the top 4 we would all be sitting here unfulfilled and jealous that we aren't part of the fun (CL, etc).

Establishing ourselves as a CL regular and a title challenger (outsider) gives us the platform to go on to greater things. Having said that we have to make it count and when we do get to semi-finals we need to do better.

I don’t intend to start a poll on this thread!

However, stimulated by this debate, here’s a little test I just formulated for myself. I took 10 different scenarios and scored each them out of 10. I’ve done it for this Season (ie. in future years my priorities could change, depending on what happens).

The scores produced a ranking which made it clear to me what I want: PL or CL, followed by domestic trophies and Top 4. However, IF I can only have PL Top 4 OR a domestic cup, I’m pretty clear in my own mind I’d go for Top 4 again. Whilst a successful day out at Wembley would be great (especially in May, ie. FA Cup), the loss of momentum (and cash) from losing CL would set us back far more than winning a domestic cup would benefit us (and give the pundits a different stick to beat us with; “Spurs back to their proper slot on Thursday nights”). Sad but that’s the way it is.

Premier League Champions 10 / 10 pnts
Champions League Winners 9

PL Top 4 AND FA Cup Winners 8 / 10
CL Finalists 7
PL Top 4 AND Carabao Winners 6
PL Runners Up 5
PL Top 4 but NO Cup trophy 4

FA Cup Winners but PL 5th 3 / 10
Carabao Winners but PL 5th 2
CL Semi-Finalists but PL 5th 1

This is exactly the way I feel about it.

There are those (and I do get it, I just don't happen to agree) that would take a domestic cup over top 4, and there are arguments how 'players want trophies'. But players also (more than a domestic cup IMO) want to play in the Champs league.

I think your prioritisation is absolutely right

Players want money first and foremost but use the excuse of wanting to play in the champions league as funnily enough that’s where the monies at.

Nothing wrong with them wanting money. It's their job at the end of the day. It's not their fault there's big money to be made in football, I'd be the same if I was them. More money to provide for my family, kids, grand kids or whatever. One bad tackle and it could all end. Ryan Mason, for example, retired early due to head injury.

Whilst i agree we should have got him when he was cheap, the ''Typical Spurs'' comment is way off....

Players we have bought at a snip and what are they worth now?

Dele 5m
Gazzinga 2.5m
Dier 4m
Tripps 3.5m
Eriksen 11m
Son 22m
Jan 10m
Toby11m
Hugo 12m
