Don’t think it was taken in the way it was intended

Originated from Bazza on SSC who meant HP sauce implying he had itk that the roof lift was gunna happen on Monday
Ok thanks, it’s a shame everyone went off at a tangent then about naming rights.

Very Old News alert:

As I understand it, White Hart Lane was never the official name for the old stadium, which was originally known as either the Spurs Ground or before that sometimes the High Round Ground. For some reason that no one now remembers for certain, WHL caught on. The very old club literature that I have from the late 50s (yes, before my time!) refers to it as the Spurs' Ground.

Not that it matters, but it demonstrates that people will eventually call it what they want to, although I suppose we're maybe more influenced by the media than people might have been way back.

I think our generation will continue to call it The Lane. I can't think what naming-rights name would be sound so good to us that we'd start using that instead.
I remember when the Premier League started and people were saying ‘Bollocks to that, it’ll always be Division 1 to me’. ‘Snickers? What kind of stupid name is that? Gimme a Marathon’. ‘Gonorrhoea my arse, I’ve got the Clap’.

That kind of thing.

Just add to earlier... there just launched their new aircraft which is generally not new news. Was only talking about it as discussing the amount of tickets offered to us from the airline that helps out that lot down the road and how it would be good to get some Tottenham options. As said it could be a wind up but for me the delay in announcing naming rights is strange and would perhaps tie in to a rumoured event in March related to stadium I read on here in another thread..or could be bollocks.. guess I'll find out in a week

I did say "our generation".

You need to make allowances for the fact that I'm a decrepit old git.

Yeah, I can't remember who it was but somebody mentioned a Stadium Pre Launch for 23 March.

Edit - It was @Breezer here.

There are some people in the new stadium thread who are up in arms that we shouldn't take money from the Qatari especially after all the construction deaths and blah blah blah. Please when did we ever care about workers from the subcontinent and their rights in the middle East. If you did then you'd have to look at alot of the UK economy and it's dealings with countries from the middle East and I say this as a British Muslim and proud Spurs fan of over 30 years. We'd be ok if it was HP from the US who of course are the honest pious guardians of the world. I as a spurs fan want to see us winning and competing with the biggest clubs out there and for that I'm not to bothered where the money comes from as long as it's legit money. That's just my 2 pennies worth. COYS.

Just from a commercial perspective anything to do with Qatar sounds bonkers right now. They're going to be a PR disaster in the football world running up to 2022, whether that's the attention on the corruption, dictatorship, modern-day slavery etc or because they're stripped of the tournament. They're in an awful diplomatic situation and we'd be foregoing the possibility of any other ties with the middle east. That same dispute could lead to severe economic problems for them, or worse. It just seems a very odd choice unless they're offering serious money because of their desperate PR situation - £30m a year or something far above what we'd even dared to hope for from anyone else.

I don't think you can compare a public limited company a to a ruling class.

If HP or any PLC used slave labour they would be answerable to their shareholders and market forces. Who are the Qataris et al answerable to? Some companies have more questionable ethics than others and your recourse is as a consummer you choose where you spend your money.

The likes of Man City, PSG and Barcelona have got into bed with the ruling class of ME countries.

I think we've proven over the last few years you can build a competitive club without selling your soul to the devil.

Look, the world is a dirty place, and there is very little most of us can do to control that. That doesn't mean we can't be against our club possibly aligning itself with one of the most disgusting perversions of football (and there have been many) that is this Qatar World Cup.

If it's Qatar Airways which it very much sounded like, they are state owned.

Morning.. pinch of salt time.. I work in travel and was just speaking to our Qatar account rep..was joking about naming rights and she smiled and said wait for an announcement on the 7th March at a big travel event in Berlin..could be just a wind up but thought worth sharing as known her for years and never normally one to wind me up.
Looking at the exhibitors from Qatar at the Berlin show, the only one that seems possible is Qatar Airways. The rest are hotels or travel tour companies.

It does seem to potentially fit but no doubt I'll look foolish in a week when it' just showing off a new First Class suite or similar.

I'd much prefer the top division to be called Division 1.
Division Clap would be OK too, admittedly.

With the standoff between qatar, and the other middle east countries i could see qatar trying to lord it over the emirates a bit.
If they pay anything near what they pay psg (which is possible as a way to tell ffp regulators that that deal is sound). Then we could look at some serious wedge.
Not who i'd prefer though.

Really, really hope it is Qatar Airways. We need to get to the next level and that aint happening with HP. Do we want to compete with Man City or just the top 4?

Some of the comments are ridiculous from the over-righteous .

Totally agree with you 100%. Some people think just cos we have challenged for the title the last 2 seasons it means if we keep at it we'll get over the hurdle. Leicester was an exception to the norm. To compete and win you need big bucks and if that means Qatar airways I don't have a problem with it.

You do realise it's only a naming rights deal don't you?

It's not as though anyone's talking about buying the club.

We were the first football club to sell our souls to the devil. “There used to be a football club over there”

Maybe we are the insurance policy where we get to host some of the World Cup games when the Qatari winter proves too hot
