I think he could do a very good job of coaching our existing CMs into a far more formidable unit than they currently are.

Obviously I mean Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Bissouma & Skipp - not Ndomblee, Lo Celso & Winks ;)
Yeah our current squad centre backs and goalkeeper aside is pretty good.

We do also need an attacking midfielder but seems club were trying to get Maddison and Conte didn’t want.

Don't believe the spin from the club. Of course Levy wanted to go and buy Madison for 60M yea yea , but Conte said no.

What about the signings Conte did want. Maybe Dan should have put some of that 60m he so willing to throw around on them.

Think it's just worth pointing a few bits out because genuinely it's that laughable that sometimes it's seems like its actually not real:
  • Pissed Poch off that much with lack of backing that he won't accept any signing in 2 consecutive transfer windows.
  • First club to go two windows with no signings
  • Overruled Poch on the sale of players including dele & ended up costing the club tens of millions
  • Sacks Poch
  • Appoints Jose & doesn't back him
  • Sacks him 4 days before a final & we remain only club since União de Leiria in 2001 that he hasn't won anything with
  • Signs us up for Super League
  • Hires Paratici (see below)
  • Spends 10 weeks trying to replace Jose
  • During that period does a rare interview and talks about DNA of club and learning from mistakes
  • Appoints Nuno with less than 2 weeks to go before preseason
  • 10 league games later sacks Nuno
  • Goes on a solo run and appoints Conte.
  • Doesn't back Conte
  • Paratici banned from Italian football for 30 months and is realistically going to get banned worldwide & potentially a jail sentence
  • About to sack Conte and we'll be the first club since Sienna in 2011 where he hasn't won anything (see Jose comment up above)
  • One of the clubs best ever players, if not the best, has 12 months remaining on deal and won't sign a new one so Levy has a choice this summer of selling him to a bigger club in premier League or letting him leave on a free

It's some litany of failures and bad decisions I don't know whether to laugh or cry

Great post.

This is only the last 4 years though.

Levys mistakes started back when he appointed Santini. Thats when i knew the guy was a fraud and totally out of his depth.

If nepotism had a picture teflon would be up there with Charles the third.

Wasn’t sure where to put this question. What is the max we could spend this summer with FFP?
Kind of irrelevant...since we won't spend anywhere close to the "max".

And, we still have to buy Porro and Kulusevski out of the summer budget...

To be fair Utd have spent enough to buy Germany during that period.
Indeed. But not in a vacuum and they've won as much in the last ten years as we have since 1984. We've not been operating on a shoestring ourselves.

The point remains, other clubs win things, even if not the things they desire most, and even if not at their best.

I'm struggling to remember the point of this club any longer. Certainly not winning cups. We're too good for that now apparently. I guess we exist to win the right, more often than not for now anyway, of getting meekly knocked out in the round of 16 in the CL.

Can we please not have a go at fans that are going to the game tomorrow or even any game at all? For some of us it's a rare occurrence, even more so when you go with family you don't see because they work abroad for long periods of time. It's my birthday present from my dad. I'm still going to get behind the players, because I still want us to win regardless of who the chairman is, who the manager is and what players are selected.
Why would anyone have a go at people going to watch the team they support?

You think?

the only constant in the last 20 years

(thanks for sharing @leethfc14)

You can go back and say if Levy bought all the players we needed then we would have won the finals we were in - but that is too simplistic because butterfly effect and all that.

So I think of it in the sense of why havent we been able to turn semi finals into finals and finals into wins. We have been in plenty of FA Cup semi finals - dating back to the 90s. I remember being battered by Everton 4 1, or losing against Newcastle 2-0 and so on into the 2000s. Not to mention Carabao Cup semis and finals. Then the CL final - the big one.

The league is a diff kettle of fish, we should clearly have been doing better to be challenging for the title and that is what id expect Levy to have done more about. Then again historically we have only won two league titles and that was within a decade of each other.

This isnt making excuses for Levy but it is way too simplistic to say it is Levys fault for us not making that final step for trophies. I always find it strange we could turn semis into finals and finals into trophies - I mean the players are all different, so to say history tells us X just doesnt make sense - the players are different. It wouldnt be too unreasonable to say we should have had three to five more trophies in the last decade let alone last 32 years since ive supported Spurs.

Because I'm seeing multiple people say we have to show our discontent with our feet and wallet. Don't go to games, don't buy merch etc. As that will show Levy or something.

The most important point is... I hope you enjoy your birthday present 🎁😊!

I doubt anyone would disagree that Poch inherited some decent players, but he was initially very successful in, ousting anyone who didn't have the right attitude, plugging the gaps with some cheap but very good signings, and improving existing players (some of whom regressed under subsequent managers).

Four of Poch's best XI were his signings and only cost approx. £56m combined:
Son - £26m
Alderweireld - £12.5m
Wanyama - £11m
Dele - £6.5m

Poch also brought in several younger squad players at very low cost, who improved the squad went on to make vital contributions:
Davies - swap (supposedly valued at circa £10m)
Trippier - £3.5m
Dier - £4m

It would be interesting to know how many of the players above were actually Poch signings though, rather than "club signings". It did seem that our success in the transfer market went down hill as he was given more control. Clearly things went particularly poorly once it came to replacing key players (Walker, Wanyama, Dembele, Eriksen). For me, Berahino was the first warning sign, but we luckily ended up with Son instead that summer.
Dele was a Pleat recommendation

If the idiot could get naming rights we’d have at least 300 million to spend under ffp.
I expect the idiot doesn't want naming rights yet because having it called the Tottenham Hotspur stadium adds more value to the brand. The idiots boss is more interested in increasing the price he'd get for selling us than raising funds to waste on transfers. Lewis gets no blame but he clearly couldn't care less on Spurs being a success on the pitch

Ndombele, Lo Celso, Aurier, Sanchez etc. were probably all recommended by other staff too...but Poch must have given his approval, so he has to at least share the blame.

I always assumed Sissoko was a Poch choice, because he kept going on about him being our best player in transition.

I am pretty sure mane is the one he wanted.

Even though we had already signed a quality LW (Son) only a year earlier - which is most likely why Levy didn't try to outbid Liverpool for his signature.

If Poch hadn't wanted Sissoko, would Levy really have splurged a record transfer fee on him, would Poch have been so complimentary of him, and would Poch have continued to select him even when the fans were booing him?

Janssen on top of that. He personally scouted him.

If I remember correctly, Sonny was thinking of leaving after his first year due to lack of minutes.

We did match Liverpool with the bid but simply wouldn’t want to match the salary, doesn’t mean he’s not the one Poch wanted as it’s still the same MO from Levy today. Going for younger players with maybe higher transfer fees but lower wages.

Sissoko was a last minute buy, if he’s the one Poch wanted then why did we went for Mane first. Sissoko was also playing as a wide midfielder then, I seriously doubt Poch would have the intention to signed him as a defensive mid.

He played CM and RW for Newcastle / France, but not LW (where Mane & Son play).
