I guess we might as well have a thread as it'll only take over the where do you think we'll finish thread and we want to keep that relatively clean so we can more easily laugh at people's outlandish or bearish predictions in May :D

Haysoos wept, it's a thread title. We might do better, we might do worse, it's no big deal, we've had this thread for the past two or three years.

Tell you what, let's not fucking bother. I'll start it again in May so that the title is accurate. Would that make you happy?

Fuck. Me.

Long long way to go, squad depth and any World Cup injuries etc will play a big part this year. I’m confident we can get top 3/4 ahead of any of : Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, but they all look strong so far so we will need to dig in.

Still think we need 2 more signings to give us a really strong chance, another CB and another AM as we are a long term CB or AM injury away from being a bit light on quality once 2 games a week come rolling round.

Last year it was seven into four for much of the season, this time I think it will be five into four, but will be tougher.

Man City haven't gone backwards at all, Liverpool might have but in the end not far enough to drop out. Chelsea will just be Chelsea and grind away and Arsenal seem to have picked up the level, but we won't know for a few weeks. So it just depends on how much we've improved, and how the fixture congestion plays out. I think that's where we have the edge over Arsenal, though they do have the better momentum for now.

Gonna be tight.

I'm finding it hard to gauge us at the moment, but it's still so early in the season and there's still a fair bit of room for improvement that can be filled with signings we've already made or ones we're yet to make.

We've had a great start in fixtures we've struggled with at some point in the past and that's with largely the exact same side as last year. I just feel like we've added some great depth to the side but we need to start doing what we can to really enhance the level in the side now.

4th? My friend we can win the league!

In all seriousness i think the squad strengthening we have done puts us in a good position to achieve champions league again.

With the exception of Arsenal i dont think the others have addressed glaring holes in their teams (yet).

Agree.
It doesnt say anything about us racing for top 4.
We could be in 12th and this thread would still be "The Race for 4th'

Dont let them get to ya.
Surprised you don't feature more regularly in 'Whats Grinding My Gears.'

? Stop being so overdramatic!

You're right though, it is just a thread title. But my point is we have progressed since last season and now Conte and us fans should aim higher than just coming top 4. There's no shame if we don't succeed but we are now in a tough race for the title

Yeah we had a thread called the race for the title a few years ago. We aimed high that year too, I think we finished 6th or something.

After a few weeks of us not doing very well people were crying and calling for a change to the thread title. Then it picked up and they wanted it changing back, then it went bandy again and guess what? So we keep it to this, it saves people's emotionally fragile state from snapping. One would hope.

We could give this thread a number of different titles and someone would complain. So this isn't 'limiting' our ambition, it's just the most neutral and probably most pragmatic thing to call it.

Or so I thought.

7 points ahead of Chelsea and 8 points ahead of Liverpool with their game in hand being against each other.

Tough game coming up at the Emirates but a great point buffer to go there with.

Too early to really be making strong predictions. If we can beat Arsenal then they’ve lost both the difficult games they’ve had so far.

A win could really hurt their confidence.

I’m just hoping Liverpool’s slow start continues. It opens be a up a lot of doors if it does.

Liverpool and Chelsea are interesting for me. I thought they would be certain top 3. Liverpool may be on a bit of a downward spiral now and it's always difficult for a manager to remain at the top level at 1 club for so long. Pep has been able to do it until now but it's a bit easier when you have unlimited backing. Chelsea surprised me by sacking Tuchel and I really don't know how they will do under Potter.

Still early in the season and I don't really look at the table until near the midway point. I think just see how far we can go until the World Cup and then set a realistic target for the 2nd half of the season. It could really be open in the top 4 more than I thought. I expect City to run away with the title at this time but that could change. 2nd may be possible for us but so difficult to write off Liverpool coming good again.

Arsenal are dark horses but I don't think they can scrap out enough tough games to challenge. It could be a close fight for 2nd or 3rd between the London clubs. Utd I think will lack consistency but they could also challenge for 4th. Newcastle most likely out of the rest to challenge for the top 6.
