I’ll be honest, the way we finished last season, and with the positive start to the transfer window, I was hoping we wouldn’t need to be commenting in this thread much.
as it turns out it’s gonna be a right slog!
I just hope we start to see a drastic improvement soon.

Not blaming you personally as many would share your opinion but just feel that this type of view is part of the reason why the fan base gets so negative so quickly which is misaligned expectations.

This is our CL competition:

Man City: Oil-state backed and possibly the best team in the world with one of the best managers the game has ever seen.

Liverpool: A team and a manager who have won every single trophy available in the last few years.

Chelsea: Previously backed by Roman with endless pockets and now with a new owner who has spent record levels. The team won the Champions League 18 months ago and have missed out on CL qualification twice in the last 20 years.

Man United: The biggest club in world football who have for a decade been a shadow of themselves but will keep throwing money on the issue until they get it right.

Arsenal: Have been in a slump for the last 6 years but had a period before that where they finished above us for 22 seasons in a row and where they qualified for CL year in and year out. Looks now to be back to their best again.

We are easily the least successful team in the top 6, in fact it used to be called the top 4 but since then an oil-state purchased Man City and we’ve organically been able to qualify for the Champions League enough times to be counted in with the big boys. Doesn’t mean however that coming top 4 is something that is the bare minimum for us, it’s very much part of a successful season.

Bah... the league is chaotic this season, mostly down to everyone having to play a match every 3 games. No suprise that every team is inconsistent. I see us slogging to get results against the likes of Bournemouth, but then Liverpool fucking up and Chelsea losing to Brighton. Meanwhile, teams not in Europe, like Newcastle, are surging up the table.

I honestly wouldn't want to try and predict the final top 4. Other than Man City being top, because oil.

Plus we have no idea how this World Cup break will change things. Some teams may get injuries from it, some players may come back fatigued, some clubs may be better off for the break. Every club will be different.

Either way nothing is settled in November, so I am not panicking or even thinking negatively just yet simply because we are still third and have played most of our toughest away games already.

Man Utd the biggest club in world football. You sound like a deluded Man U fan.
Compared to Real Madrid they are nowhere near.
Support and domestic trophies almost but 13 Champ lge/euro cups compared to 3.
Nowhere near.
At least they are a proper football club and not a Punch and Judy club.

It's still early but I would add Newcastle to that list. No Europe to contend with, best defence in the league and have looked good against all their top 6 opponents so far (not to mention beating us). They will also look to spend again in January and will probably go back in for Maddison.

I genuinely believe that they pose more of a threat to top 4 than Man Utd this season.

Thanks for mentioning that Real Madrid has more CL titles than United, really changes the whole message of my post.

Newcastle seem to be stumbling around picking up draws, we need to carry on as we are and hope they continue to drop points.

I personally think it will come down to us and them but if we hit the form we did towards the end of last season, then we should go above them and start to build a gap. Brighton the only other team that I could see pushing us, they are quietly going about picking up wins and have 2 games in hand on us.

Arsenal collapse, United lose every midfielder due to injury/suspension, Newcastle have the squad depth of a League 1 club and City get a points deduction.

Title's ours lads.

I always thought we would catch Newcastle, but it did depend on us 'clicking' back into the form , which we did against Fulham. A fully fit squad and increased confidence will be massive from now on. We have far more ability to score goals than Newcastle, but it was the clean sheets we really needed. Our squad depth much better than theirs.

To be honest 'if' we can continue in the form we have now found (which we also produced at the end of last season as well) then who knows what we could do , definitely top 4 in the league and sustained run in the cup (s).

If we hit form the same as we did at this stage last season then absolutely, 4th is definitely doable. And i feel the squad is better placed to cope this time.

We've got a tough run of games coming up though.

Feb is tough but March looks (dare I day it) very winnable. I'd be very hopeful if by end of Feb we're in a similar position to now.

Still can catch utd but need to go on a run now. They have to dip at some point. We should aim for 3rd really, very achievable.

FA Cup and 4th is absolutely on.

Ill also say CL, and im not even lying on that front - it will require favourable draws and a bit of confidence but think teh second part of CL is all about timing and right now if we continue from the last few games - think good things await. There really isnt one stand out teams and all teams have their own trials and tribulations. PSG, Bayern, Real.... Liverpool, Man City etc etc etc

If key players stay healthy we can do it, but it won't be easy with us still being in CL and FA Cup. Hopefully teams learn how to score against Newcastle.

It is scarcely believable how much more positive I feel than before the Fulham game. Clean sheets, fit players, bench actually looking strong….

I’d have said 6th would be my prediction with more downside than upside risk 2 weeks ago, now I’d predict 4th.

Reckon Utd are most likely to catch Arsenal IMO. I think we would be chasing down Newcastle (very doable) and City (also looks doable as they are not themselves, plus today's news about financial breaches hanging over them).
