Future iterations of this thread should probably go in General Football for the next few seasons...

I don’t think people are realising how much it’ll hurt us not being in Europe.
If it hurts Levy it in turn hurts us as a team and fans.
And also makes the rebuild much harder.
It's an absolute body blow but a series of bad mistakes usually comes with some bad consequences.

This is when coherent thinking combined with genuine courage in making the tough choices will be needed most from the entire footballing infrastructure at the club.

I'm not very optimistic at the best of times...

Brighton beat Villa and we draw 0-0 with Leeds. 7th Place finish on goal difference baby. Calling it now. Come back to heart this post next weekend

I think 2/3 of the way through the season we must have decided to compete with Chelsea in a race for mid-table, because top 4 was looking to easily attainable given the inconsistent form of our immediate rivals. 🙃

This is assuming Brentford don't beat City, which is definitely possible

I know 8th doesn’t get European football but have the rules changed recently? Didn’t it used to be that if teams finishing in the top 4 also won domestic cups then it adds the relevant number of places lower down? So City and Utd (or Utd twice) will win the cups, why doesn’t that mean 6th and 7th now also get Europa (5th are guaranteed anyway) and 8th gets Conference? Has that changed or have I just misremembered how it works.

Apologies if already explained.

League Cup winners qualify for the Conference League as of a couple of years ago, not the Europa. So Man Utd winning that means the place transferred to 7th place

I'm not expecting us to beat Leeds, so I don't expect us to make 7th, even if we did I'd expect the same as before with the arrogant approach and early exit. But just say we did finish 7th and West Ham win the Conf League, would that mean they get one of the two Europa spots and the Conf League then goes to 6th?

Though we have had great times in that period and the landscape has changed. Just that we have not!
We won a league cup, I know the Poch and Redknapp times where a high, but at the same time leaves a sense of what could/should have been if not for ENIC. Just to put into perspective, since ENIC took over and that sole League cup, Leicester have won, League One, Championship, Premiership, FA Cup & Charity Shield.

Top 4 CL
5th and FA Cup winner EL
League Cup winner ECL

If FA Cup winner is in top 5, EL place goes to 6th

If league Cup winner is in the top 5 (or 6th if FA cup winner is in the top 5) ECL place goes to 6th/7th

Champions League and Europa League yeah

But don't think Conference League football will make much of a difference financially.

In fact, finishing outside of the European places altogether means the club has no choice but to be ruthless and cut the squad down. The rebuild might be easier.

Whereas if we finish in the Conference League places you can bet the club will keep a lot of the deadwood around.

Because there are only 2 Europa spots via League placings not 3. There used to be 3 but the 3rd place instead now goes to the Conference.

The rules change every 3 seasons. There are huge changes the season after next...5th place next season could get a 5th Champions League spot the season after.
