What did he do to ruin it? I've only seen the highlights but don't think there's any issue with the red card.

Good effort from the Crusaders to go there and win in Jo'burg (and they were two scores up before the red card to be fair) but looked like a great fight back from the Lions.

I think it was Ellis Park, dude.

Really? I thought it was really harsh, especially considering it's a final (though the fact it was a final shouldn't really factor but from a fan point of view.....)

I just thought the guy was clearly pulling out, he didn't even jump. Yes, he should of pulled up a bit earlier but there was no intent there. Personally I think a pen would've been fine but a yellow was probably the right decision. I guess Peyper will say letter of the law but I just think it was an insanely harsh call but Peyper likes being the centre of attention.

Nope t'was definitely in Jo'burg (just checked again).

The laws are really clear on taking people out in the air, and if you do it and the guy lands on his neck then it's a red card all day long.

You can argue about the rights and wrongs of that (I'm not a big fan of the consequence dictating the punishment) but it's fairly cut and dry, and it's a basic error to do what the guy did knowing what the rules are.

Not really Peyper's fault for me. Reffed it correctly and you can't let the fact that it's a final change the decision.

Like I say Peyper will just say letter of the law and they've amplified this law in the last couple of years much in the same way as they have with high tackles (which again I think has gone way over the top and isn't reffed with much consistency)

Intent is important with tackling the player in the air (which the Saffer didn't technically do, he had his arms up to try and pull out) he did, however, make contact and this is what Peyper will say has caused the dangerous play and I don't think the fact the guy wasn't contesting it didn't do him any favours.

At the end of the day, though, I've seen yellows and pens for similar incidents as he didn't technically tackle him, he barely touched him, it clearly wasn't malicious and common sense, imo, should've prevailed but you don't know what Peyper you're getting from 1 game to the next. Look at all the shit he let slide in that 2nd test between Ireland and NZ in Dublin. Shit, there were about 4 incidents which were far more dangerous in that game that went unpunished and not even a pen or yellow let alone a red.

Anyway, it was stupid allowing a SA ref ref a final with a South African team in.

You sure it was Joberg?

Definitely Jo'burg but I will your error slide on the grounds that it was at Ellis Park...in Jo'burg.

Agree about letting a South African ref a game with a South African team in it, but think you're being unnecessarily harsh on Peyper generally.

I don't think he's any better or worse than a lot of the top refs at the moment and deals pretty well with the ever changing laws of the game.

As to the high tackle and the tackle in the air, the fact is that intent really doesn't matter anymore. If you are reckless and that causes injury/a dangerous situation then you are liable to get a red-card.

As I said before you can argue whether that's right or not, but I can guarantee that almost every ref in World rugby would have sent Kwagga off for that, in the same way that most would have sent off SBW in the 2nd Lions test.

Oh yeah.

What you say is fair and while I'm not a massive fan of Peyper it's more the rule changes (not just in this area) that I take issue with. Common sense has been taken out of the game completely.

NZ are 40-6 up against Australia and it's only HT.

Damien Mackenzie really is a great little player. His first or second start today with Smith on the wing. Kaino sent home for being a naughty boy for cheating on his Mrs.

Watching Brisbane Broncos vs Parramatta Eels now. 11 seconds in and Parramatta have scored a try. The fastest ever in NRL history.

Parramatta kicked off. Chased it down. Brisbane spilled it. Parra's player picked it up and scored. Pathetic from the home team.

Edit: bloody hell. Another try. Semi Radradra has just run almost the whole length of the field, beating 2 or 3 and twisting the others around to score. 7 mins gone and about to be 0-12.

Edit 2: Radradra has scored again. 3 tries in 12 minutes.

Edit 3: and another. 4 tries, 20 mins. Fans may as well go home.

So I'm going to the women's rugby world cup final on Saturday in Belfast.

Looking forward to it having seen the semi-final. The rest of the tournament has thrown up a lot of one sided matches, but the England v France game was very tight, and quite brutal at times.

I reckon the England v NZ final will be a great game...plus by the time it kicks off I'll probably be hammered anyway.

If the Semi Radradra can score 3 tries in 12 minutes, I'd love to se what the complete Radradra can do.

Feeling a little like a dinosaur in this age of enlightenment, and implying nothing in particular, can I just ask; is the rugby any good?

It's much much better than it used to be. I went to a six nations game at the Stoop a few years back and England just massacred Wales, and both sides may as well have played without forwards.

When there are two even teams now, the quality is pretty high, and much more reminiscent of the men's game than it used to be (not that that's what they're necessarily aiming for). The tackling is much better, the forward play is greatly improved, and the kicking is probably the most improvement I've seen.

That said, there still aren't very many decent teams, and I suspect you could have picked this final before the tournament started. The England v France game has been one of the few where the teams have been close to evenly matched, so it's made for some right hammerings (Hong Kong in particular conceded an epic amount of points).

But I suppose it wasn't that long ago that teams were getting 100 points put on them in the men's world cup, and if they don't participate they won't improve, so I think it's all been very positive generally.

Just hope England get a win at Kingspan on Saturday!

I may watch it. I sort of feel guilty not watching, though if I do I don't know how many brownie points Mrs Too will deduct from my allowance, and with the US Open tennis coming up ...

If you do watch it, I make no apology if I drunkenly invade the pitch at some point.

I think gates open at about midday as there's two games before the final, which leaves a good 8 hours of pre-match drinking.

Great to see the Premiership back.

First game showing what a tough competition it is with Gloucester currently beating the champions.
