Ireland would have won that game either way but that red card is straight out of the 'game is gone' category

Properly stupid and I'm not quite sure where rugby now goes on those sorts of calls

Either way, congratulations to Ireland. Superb achievement and I genuinely think they can, and should, win the World Cup

Very harsh red IMO. As he said he just braced for the inevitable impact, which was unavoidable at that stage. His arm was at his side, so he didn't have his elbow outstretched or anything. It was just an unfortunate collision that meant there was head contact with hi

The game has a huge problem with concussion. Steward was unlucky and I don’t believe there was intent but the laws are pretty black and white on head contact. He had to go.

I know there's a problem with concussion and they're trying to fix that. However, the rules are not black and white on this. First and foremost, it wasn't a tackle as I said above. They essentially ran into each other. They were both going for the loose ball, Kennan got there first by a hair, then Stewart realizes he can't safely tackle him so tries to back out but doesn't have time in the split second he's got so, out of instinct, "braces" for impact by turning sideways.

Keenan, in a similar boat, is stumbling forwards trying to gather the ball, and essentially falls into Stewart. In a complete fluke, happens to bang his head on Stewart's elbow, which is clearly not outstretched in any way.

In terms of the rules, even if you say it counts as a tackle (which it clearly wasn't IMO). The ref is allowed to account for mitigating favtors. I'd say there is plenty of mitigation to downgrade that to a yellow at the very least. I still think that would've been slightly harsh given it was just a freak accident but it would at least be a compromise.

To claim there were no mitigating factors at all and treat it like Stewart has just got flying in and ice-hockey tackled him, elbowing him in the head in the process, is just flat out bollocks but that's what the ref seems to have decided he did.

the ref must have been a hell of player - he tried telling Steward he had time to get out the way or move his body round. as you say, all happened in a millisecond!

Ruined the game, but Jaco Peyper usually finds a way to do that.

Match now declared a draw. Well played England. :D

More realistically (perhaps :cautious:) Ireland would still have won, but it was always an obviously silly decision that spoiled what would have been a better game.

As I said, Peyper ruined the game, but he's no stranger to that.

Common sense prevails IMO. As you say I don't think it really affected the result, but it was clearly the wrong decision to send him off altogether.
