He took them midtable 2 seasons and won 1 in 15 the season he got sacked. It has to be jobs for the boys, he must know someone. There must be dozens out there with better CVs that would love that job.
There’s also the fact that the club were looking for a bit of stability after Ugo’s passing and McKenna leaving. You can attract more up and coming coaches who clearly just want to be passing through on their way up. Whether he’s good enough or not, I don’t know.

I was only talking about our coaches the other week, as part of a longer post.

If you are a club with a defined style/philosophy across all age groups from top to bottom, then for me it's not just the players who need educating and immersing in this style of play it's the coaches too. They need to completely believe and know the ideas of what is being coached. The style of play, the coaching drills, as they work with older age groups the increasingly intricate tactical aspects and ideas etc. They need to know it all, and believe it, inside out. Start at the bottom and the ones with real talent work their way through the ranks like the kids in the academy to more senior positions - maybe even the most senior one with the first team, you never know. With some coaches, arguably our better ones in recent times, this has been the case, but when it comes to others Ehiogu (RIP) seemed to get fast-tracked to the reins of the U23 team and that's just continued. I get why you might want someone with managerial experience (especially now we're in the EFL competition) but what does Wayne Burnett offer or know about the ethos/style of play at our club? The same went for Scott Parker, even though everyone loved the thought of an undoubted model professional imparting his knowledge, what did he know about our systems of play and how to implement them? Matt Wells has served his apprenticeship, should in theory be well grounded/schooled and a good selection, we shall see.....

I don't know how and on what criteria coaches like Burnett get selected, and from what I gather we have a lot of coaches/managers who are kinda unofficially working short stints with us and maybe the club select those that impress them, but in my opinion if you have a style of play that has been developed, full of little intricacies and ideas, you want a coach who has been immersed in it rather than plucking someone from outside the environment.

Our coaches seemed to be picked more by the old boys clubs rather actually fitting our philosophy

Its not been one or two coaches, its been more and there does seem to be a revolving door like when Kenny Jackett arrived at the club

Hope Shashoua's loan turns out well, no idea who the club is but as long as he gets to play some first team football it's fine by me. I think the u23 leagues are pretty useless and would much rather see those from 18-21 get first team football on loan. Just don't know why we don't establish some partnerships with clubs that play decent football in league 1, ere divisie, spl.

Easier said than done though isn't it? Coaches immersed in Poch's style would get snapped up. Particularly when he has his 3 first team coaches he trusts, where is the progression in Spurs' set up for coaches?

I'm sure most of you are already aware but our U23s are taking on Arsenal at the Emirates this Friday. Tickets are currently free for ST Holders and Members up until 10am tomorrow morning (£4.00 Adults and £2.00 Concessions thereafter) if you call the Ticket Office. We've received an allocation of 500.

Let's pack out the away end and make an occasion of it. I'm sure the lads would appreciate the support in the first NLD of the season.

Firstly, however good he has been for the club, I have always said, and stand by it, that Poch (or whoever is the first team coach) should not be setting the style of play to be followed throughout the whole club. Managers are short term, putting in place a way of playing from top to bottom is long term. What if the next manager wants uber-technical small tiki-taka midfielders, or is an old school 4-4-2 type manager, does everything get ripped up and start again? Instead of everyone emulating what the first team does, I believe the first team should just puts the final pieces in place to what has been taught since they were small kids at U8 level or whatever. The first team coach should be chosen because they'll fit what is already being done here, rather than coming in and revolutionising everything. That is just my ideal, I doubt many will agree, or care, if Poch/whoever is doing the biz......

On to the main point, I don't see why it's so unrealistic. I want coaches schooled in the way we play and it's ideas and facets (laid out by whoever - McDermott maybe or some Technical Coordinator/Director overseeing things) and them to move up, much like the players. Start working with the lower age groups and it's a focus on technique, working higher up and you add technical drills like how to play out from the back etc. and tactical facets like pressing, when/how etc. Some of the best academies - Ajax, Barca - have always operated like this. If they're doing well and showing ability and a positions becomes available, move them up. If they get poached to go elsewhere, great good luck to them, but we should constantly be taking prospective coaches into the club (eg. like we have done with former players like McKenna, Wells, Cox) in order to mitigate for this.

People like Burnett (and Scott Parker too when he was here) might be good appointments who offer a lot, I don't know, but purely the way I look at it I cant see how putting in an outsider to the key development phases a step or two away from the first team, who is unfamiliar with what has been taught at the club and will have to learn/adapt himself, is the best way to go about player development.

I'm not familiar with Burnett's credentials but our criteria when recruiting age group coaches is not match management but day to day player development. I'm sure we do our background research on all of our coaches. The only ones we'd be hurting by giving jobs to the boys is us.

Therefore I have to assume that Jackett & Burnett had some credibility as developers of players.

There are some truly horrible people out there with management experience who could win the U23 league with the squad we have here but I wouldn't let them within a 10 mile radius of our training ground. *cough* Graham Westley *cough*

Would love to nick Liam rosenoir off Brighton. He’s completely immersed in philosophy and style of play. Sometimes he sounds slightly idealistic but I just see him working great with youth players. Hopefully Mason will come through in a coaching aspect.
