It feels so alien to be celebrating an English sportsperson without it being for a runners-up medal.

Some outrageous shots by Raducanu, but one halfway through the second set made my jaw drop.

Give her a break, imo. She was 18 at at start of the tournament and that was at a point where she had the momentum.

She'll regret the episode but I don't think it condemns her.

No, sorry, I've seen enough, consider her condemned.

Really wasn't even much of an episode. There's so many players on the tour who would feel similar in stopping on such a point.

Wow wow wow ?

Incredible final, both played at such a high level and Emma still powered through. Unprecedented on so many levels the fact she’s a qualifier is nothing compared to the fact she played more matches at the US open than in her whole senior professional career.

Two top talents who will hopefully compete at the very top for years. Emma is just epic! The most excited I’ve been about tennis in years. Already looking forward to her next Open.

Tim Henman summed it up perfectly. Absolute joke.

Great, attacking tennis from both women. Great advert for the women's game and for the future.

Raducanu will be interesting to watch next season; how does she react to what she's just done? There have been so many women recently who have peaked and faded, but she seems to be one tough cookie with no obvious technical weaknesses. The next Serena? Who knows. But a hell of a player.

Well done Emma!

This is the big thing for me. We spoke a few months ago on this thread about the lack of big players / characters in the women’s game.

On one side it shows the strength in depth but also there are no stand out exceptional players. This could be a huge opportunity to step into the void left by the likes of Serena, Clijsters, Henin, etc… There have been quite a few first time winners over the past couple of years, can she establish herself at the top of the game?

Since 2010 there have been 23 different major winners in the women’s game:
  • Serena Williams
  • Angelique Kerber
  • Kim Clijsters
  • Victoria Azarenka
  • Li Na
  • Maria Sharapova
  • Petra Kvitová
  • Garbiñe Muguruza
  • Naomi Osaka
  • Simona Halep
  • Francesca Schiavone
  • Samantha Stosur
  • Marion Bartoli
  • Flavia Pennetta
  • Jeļena Ostapenko
  • Sloane Stephens
  • Caroline Wozniacki
  • Ashleigh Barty
  • Bianca Andreescu
  • Sofia Kenin
  • Iga Świątek
  • Barbora Krejčíková
  • Emma Raducanu

Compare that to the men’s side where there have been just 8 :wideyed:
  • Djokovic
  • Federer
  • Nadal
  • Murray
  • Wawrinka
  • Čilić
  • Thiem
  • Medvedev

(Edited to add in Medvedev after he beat Djokovic)

Absolutely. I really don't like the current state of the women's game but this might actually bring me back in, especially if Osaka can return and maintain a high level too. On that list, I've barely heard of the 4 players there before Raducanu. I won't expect Fernandez and Raducanu to suddenly start making consistent finals on the WTA tour, but it certainly bodes well for the future and if we're lucky the near future. The thing that looks encouraging with Raducanu especially is how she's been winning and it's also someone who's really impressed at Wimbledon already, a place where I can just barely comprehend the pressure felt for a British person to be playing there.

I said to my coach the other day that I'd be nervous with a tiny 2 row stand on the side watching me let alone thousands in attendance and what feels like a whole nation :D I think it's incredible that they were both able to go and perform to that level on such a stage and at such an age.

I haven't been able to keep up with the women's game since the days of peak Williams's, Henin, Mauresmo, Clijsters etc. to the point where I had to Google a few of those names to remember who they were.

It really needs 3 or 4 of the current crop (I'd assume the likes of Gauff will also be there or there abouts) to dominate and create real rivalries to give it a new injection of life. Last night was a great start.
