Fridel played 9 matches last season and that's only so low because we bombed out of the FA Cup. I suspect with a more able number 2 this figure would be higher still.

yes and of those 9 we could have had anyone standing in goal for about 7 of them. whenever we faced someone of higher quality we reverted back to hugo anyway.

i usually am but then again i'm usually right too. just look at the backlash i received over paulinho and soldado.
Everyone on this forum can claim to have been right at one point about this and that. Doesn't mean nobody is ever wrong, just because everybody is sometime right.

But now we won't have to...... The sort of fast paced game that Lloris plays the more times we can get away with resting him the better I think.

you're the ones turning it into a big deal. i just gave my opinion.
I think youre missing the point that Brad is a completely different type of keeper to Hugo. With the players we have, defense is the least adaptable facet of our play. Tinkering at the back is a lot riskier than in any other part of the team. If we're going to be playing so many games in a season it makes sense to have a back up as good and as fitting to our style of play as Vorm. Even more so if we intend to get into the CL (which in my opinion can only realistically be done by winning the EL). Real Madrid had Lopez and Casillas last year. That worked out pretty well for them I'd say. Having two high quality GKs in a team that plays in both local and continental competitions is actually a smart investment.

Apart from everything else Vorm is surely young enough still to retain his value? Sell him in a year or two's time if we need to and we will have only lost his wages imo.

we didn't have to anyway but still did, just as we will if vorm signs or not. say we're playing arsenal in an fa cup semi final, you think we're not playing hugo? i'd rather just give archer the experience of standing in goal while we beat the cannon fodder instead of paying 5m for someone else to do it.

Fair enough. I guess the question is what happens if Lloris tears a hamstring charging out or takes a head injury. Still happy with Archer? Or even Friedel?

Picking up Vorm would be incredibly smart for us....the ideal with any club is to have at least 2 players capable of being a starter at EVERY position. That includes GK.

Having a quality backup GK who fits with your system is pure insurance, you hope you never need to call on it but if you do then it is worth every pound. Yes it is true that GKs don't get hurt as much as outfield players...but what happens if Hugo does get injured?....we rely on an ageing GK who is slow footed or a 21 year old who has never played 1 minute of time at a level higher than League 1.

Not to mention we are in the Europa league and cups....do we really need to drag Hugo to a Thursday night match at North Pole FC or put him in net against Accrington in the middle of the week? Wouldn't it be nice to let Hugo sit out a match now and then and not have to risk him charging out of net and getting hammered in some mid week matchup.

I'd like to be able to compete in all the cups plus the league without having to rely solely on the first XI for every match and that does include the GK slot.

Would it be a sexy signing?....no, not at all. Would it improve the sqaud?....yes

We should be looking to improve the squad wherever we can...including backups and Vorm would do that at a minimal price.

Assuming this happens, it is a good signing imo. This is not a Hugo replacement, nor is it to give Hugo more games off - it is an insurance policy in case Hugo gets injured. Friedel is not the guy who can play for a month or two if LLoris suffers a longer-term injury. And Friedel is only here for the rest of this season. Vorm will be here, as the back-up, for several years.

yeah. friedel was still a competent keeper last season so i doubt he's lost it over the past couple of months. i'm not sure if vorm is even worth 5m in isolation either, did he not lose his place to tremmel last season? why has he just been replaced by fabianski?

Also it keeps loris on his toes. Players lose form. We only need to look at Joe Hart last season as a perfect example. He needed a rest and man city were able to bring in pantilemon to deputise well. If we sign Vorm we now have that option. It's common sense really.

Could be various reasons although all speculative. Maybe he didnt gel with Monk, he might have been one of Laudrups boys. We have seen before how a change in manager can see decent players turfed out.

Whilst I don't think Friedel has "lost it", we are heavily reliant on Lloris and playing Friedel changed our game.

The £5m is a different question and I guess we will only see if he was worth it after his time with us. If we won Europa thanks to him (very hypothetical penalty shoot out scenario!) then we wouldn't doubt it. Remember Friedel in the Basel shoot out. Didn't get close.

With CL on the line for progressing in the Europa we have to try and be as competitive as possible.

I think you're thinking of Tim Krul who was subbed on for Holland during the penalties.
Nope. They even said at the time that they were surprised Vorm wasn't put on instead as he is known for saving penalties. Krul was brought on because of his height and bigger reach.

Getting vorm in is a no brainer for me. Good shot stopper & his distribution from goal with his feet are as good as you gonna see imo.

Vorm has saved 3 in the PL whilst Krul has saved 2 (with an extra season to do so in)

So yeah Vorm is alright at them, always looks like he's got a good chance of saving them when I've seen him face them.
