So we weren't close to signing Villa even though the player himself admitted it was close to happening up until Atletico came in for him? Some people really do set themselves up at times.

I still think we'll end up going back to Internacional with our tales between our legs. We probably thought we could walk away from the deal and go get someone else but it doesn't seem likely to happen.

Really not sure what to think of Bernard either. Can we really afford the top striker we need AND Bernard? If so then it would be incredible to get both. I just can't see it.

Hello.

Could you please link me to the quotes where David Villa informs the world he almost signed for Spurs before Atletico came in. I'll then gladly forward them on to my source with a note informing him he is in fact an attention seeking liar.

Throughout the Villa saga I was repeatedly told it was BS. There was SO much talk in the press and on here that I myself refused to believe what I was being told. No smoke without fire and all that jazz. Then he signed for Atletico only a day or so after the whole world was claiming we had the deal done. I know where I'm putting my faith from now on. Never been let down.

"There was SO much 'talk' in the press."
This should be this forums motto

Villa never named as as the club. People making assumptions.

I don't think there are any quotes of him mentioning us specifically. Villa mentions another Club and everybody assumes its us. Even if he's referring to us the fact that he say Atletico did more than three days than the other Club did in months suggests the interest we, allegedly, had wasn't exactly cast iron - far from it.

Arsenal were in for him supposedly.

Maybe it was them he was referring to.

You know what doesn't make sense?
The notion that we switched from Villa to Benteke and now to Bernard.
Totally different types of players. Who is next if Bernard goes tits up?
Will we make a run at James McCarthy then if no, move on to Craig Bellamy then BA Baracus then Josef Stalin, then a statue of Elizabeth the First and when she won't come we'll go hard for Job and a Pillar of Salt.
More failed deals will lead us to bid on the Sphinx and another rejection will lead us to try and seed humanity with help from the Anukaki.
Lastly God will morph into Glenn Hoddle and we will be back to square one.

Only hard to believe if you dont remember the whole frazier-campbell affair. Worryingly feasible to those of us who still do.

Sorry if it's already been mentioned but does that £25m include the £17m paid for Paulinho?

Dang. Last yr of his contract. Well, if he helps gets us over the line in a deal for Bernard then great but we'll not be fooling anyone into thinking he's worth more than £2m or £3m at most.

It's been widely reported he has a Spanish passport, not that it matters much as long as it's an EU one

You're right, it is Spanish, and not Italian (as posted by someone earlier in the thread).
