I think AVB simply had to have some period of time to assess his squad, see what he needs and who he wants to keep and sell. It would have been crazy for him to have come in and made decisions without working with his squad in training and seeing them perform in match situations.

Ok its not ideal with so little time left in the window, but better to get things right than to make assumptions without really knowing what you need.

Obviously Irons are already in fires so it should just be a matter of giving the final ok to what's wanted and Levy starting to pull some triggers.

What's this? Common sense? Stop it! Stop it immediately, do you hear?

This has been my train of thought for a couple of days now, after the initial disillusionment over lack of movement had passed obviously...
We keep hearing 'things are going on behinf the scenes'.... Well maybe it was just a case of getting to grips with what we have and don't have, then making the necessary changes.
In reality, Huddlestone, Jenas, Bentley, Dos Santos etc barely featured last year, but we have over 30 full England caps, and in Dos Santos a 23yr old with almost 660 Mexico caps, over 3 times more appearances for Mexico than Spurs... The first two have been banker starters for Spurs at some point in their career, until loss of form/injury.
Certain other players are believed to have staked a claim going on media comments, Townsend for one could offer genuine like for like cover on the left wing as a natural pacy left footed option.

Realistically assessing where we are at, I think Naughton has been givena chance to show he can replace Corluka as our second option at RB. Vertonghen is in effect replacing King in the squad, and with his International and CL experience, not to mention his proven leadership qualities, he should be a good addition. With Dawson back fit also, and Caulker returning matured and better for his loan experience, we look ok at the back. Fryers should add some depth to challege BAE too.
King and Corluka gone. Vertonghen, Dawson, Bassong, Caulker and Naughton signed/returned from injury/loans.
Centrally I'm not concerned, Parker, Sandro and Livermore were good for us last year. Throw in the return of Huddlestone and Jenas and we have 5 solid options. Modric, will in all likelihood be gone if the ITK we have seen is true, and in my uninformed opinion I can't see any realistic outcome where he stays. Sigurdsson and vdv should give us a cutting edge goal threat in that advanced midfield role. Cover was/is needed to avoid burnout of Bale and Lennon again, and ITK would have us believe Bentley and GDS are being given clean slates to prove they can provide genuine alternatives. Townsend also appears to be trying to grasp his chance with both hands.
Krancjar gone, Modric likely too. Sigurdsson, Huddlestone, Jenas, Bentley, Townsend signed/returned from injury/loans.
All this leads us to our one problem position, becasue I really believe elsewhere we are well stocked for quality options. Defoe is our one senior striker. Harry Kane has had some gametime, but is very inexperienced and would likely benefit from one more good loan spell to follow up his Millwall stint. ITK has gone quiet on Adebayor. Rondon was briefly linked, but other than that, all quiet. This is the only are we need to address. Just maybe going in publicly for someone liek Rondon, a younger cheaper option with potential, could spark Adebayor/City into finalising their deal. I feel even if we don sign Adebayor to join Defoe, we still need someone ni that eraly twenties bracket as another option, someone with their best years ahead of them, not us paying big money for the finished article when we don't really have the pull at the moment with wages and no CL. Lets get a younger hungry option, someone who can develop and mature at Spurs.

So, in my mind, it is not as doom and gloom as everyone makes out. A few tweaks to our forward line, as in lets buy one, then maybe someone to replace Modric, and maybe a younger keeper with one eye on our next season given our ageing options, job done.

Ok its not ideal with so little time left in the window ...

Like, say, the best part of a MONTH.

Loads of time. Yes, we start sooner, but the window doesn't close for a couple of weeks after that.

People are panicking unnecessarily. And over-the-toply in my op.

i envy your unwavering optimism stoof. :)

on my side, im trying to keep it rational, but the buying of top striker has dragged on for so long now, i think we were all fooled into this window being different, especially how things were unraveling at the beginning of July.

I still have faith, as the alternative is unthinkable, but wished, for sanity's sake, that things moved along quicker.

I do not think much assessment is needed to realise we need a striker, and AVb presumably already had an idea what he was looking for.

The other key piece of business is selling Modric and signing a replacement. Again I do not think the US tour will have told AVB anything he did not know.

Any other business we do is just tweaking; and that is what the US tour has been about, looking at fringe players - are Gomes, Naughton, Bassong, Huddlestone, Jenas and Bentley up for competing for a place in the squad? Are Smith, Carroll, Townsend and Kane ready to step up as back-up? All very interesting, but our priority is still to sort out the Modric situation and sign a top striker. Do that and we can compete regardless of who else comes and goes.
