...to keep up our record of winning a trophy in every decade since the 1950s.

One of our more impressive stats, and one that only United can match.

Can we do it? We seem to be focussed on league position over domestic cups, and one of those three seasons will see us playing our home games on a temporary ground (possibly Milton Keynes Non-Dons, Wembley, or even sharing with the soap dodgers at the OS).

It would be a pretty damning statistic for Levy's reign if we fail to win a trophy in the next three seasons. On the other hand, this would also be the period where we've been provided with an incredible training ground and what looks like being a stunning new stadium. The latter could set us up for many decades of success in the future.

Thoughts?

I get more worried about this every year. One of the few records no-one can take away from us and only United can match it. But we don't look like we have any real commitment to any of the cups and I think it's going to be very tough to win one in just three years.

Our best opportunity was probably the FA Cup this season, given how shit the big sides were, and how Leicester weren't too bothered about it.

You guys are going to hate me for saying this, but I hope we exit the League Cup quick fast in a hurry. I feel like 4 comps is a bridge too far. 3, yes- no problem- but not 4. And here goes: I would rather make the QF's of the Champions League then win the League Cup. Yup, that's right- crucify me if you want but it's how I feel.

To get to the final eight- especially if you-know-who do their usual Round-of-16 flameout- would be more rewarding than winning whatever-the-sponsor's-name-is Cup. Yes I enjoyed beating Chelscum that day- it was fucking great- but I enjoyed beating Milan at the San Siro (and the Lane) 1000X more. And hell- merely having a game at the Bernabeu was worth it.

With the League Cup, never once did I feel the kind of spine-tingling, breathless excitement that I did every moment we played in the Champions League. I remember literally sprinting home from work to watch us play (destroy) Werder Bremen. I couldn't believe how incredible that was. I must've watched the anthem alone 5 times. Again, I was happy when we won the Carling cup, sure- but the whole thing just never quite impacted me the way seeing our boys standing at the Lane getting ready to play Inter- as the theme song played in the background- did. I'm not gay, but that night I was so excited I would've given Rafael Van der Vaart better head than Sophie.

To those who say "making Top 4 isn't a trophy," I say "unfortunately, these days it kind of is." Imagine, if you will, that it was us who came back from three goals down to beat, say, Real Madrid in the Champions League final (as a woefully undermanned/overpowered Liverpool team somehow, someway managed to do a decade ago against the then-best team on earth, AC Milan); I would watch a replay of the match every single day- when I got home from work- for the rest of my life. I want success in that competition- and watching Athletico, I feel we can do it- but not if we're simultaneously in three other races.

This summer transfer window is extremely vital, especially we have CL football now.
I thought we would lose top4 position last summer because we fail to buy a decent forward and Midfielder. Turns out we lose the title arguably due to a lack of bench options.
Hence, I think we need to buy what we really need now. We must build on this season, and to become a CL regular. Otherwise, I afarid that we will fall back to europa regular

We are not going to alter our approach so I fail to see why we would expect a different outcome to the last year 8 years. The disruption that we will face in that period with the stadium move and a likely managerial change ( which statistically is very probable) will also make this a difficult task. I hope I am wrong but don't expect to be.

I'm a cup before cl quali traditionalist but I agree the league cup must now become our proving ground for the best academy prospects whilst we rest key first teamers.

And, depending how things are going in the league and cl into the new year, perhaps the fa has to be treated in the same way?

Much will depend on who we sign, which positions the injuries affect and not least of course who we get drawn against.

If we can get gooner type home draws against lower league opposition past the quarters then we can obviously beat anyone on our day either at Wembley in a one off or home and away over two legs. At that point Poch would surely consider playing his best xl, bollox to the kids got us here so should carry on romantic nonsense.

As for Levy, of course a mix of trophy wins and average league finishes should be the key metric, not off the field stuff which should only exist to help generate on field. And you're absolutely right that the comparison should be across decades, and not just with scholar or sugar.

Here's hoping the planets align and this squad learns from the horrific end to last season, and wants to prove to a man they are not, bottle jobs.

Unless our attitude to cups change we're not winning a trophy anytime soon. Even in seasons when it's clear we have nothing to play for league wise we still have a small time attitude. It's been 34 years since we've reached 2 finals in a year yet them grief junkies have done it twice in 4 years. Again it comes down to mentality issues for me, we just don't want to win them enough. Give me a day out in Basel, winning a prestigious trophy at the same time with direct qualification to the CL than a bottle job 3rd place finish. Nobody remembers losers!!!

Yep, if this team (recent blip aside) is half useful and wants to live up to this seasons hype then we need to start laying down some markers and picking up trophies along the way as a sign that we are competing at the top. 25 years since an FA Cup win for example really isn't a good look...
