Warning To All Chelsea Fans –

Two Chelsea fans appeared in court today charged with offensive/racist chanting after being arrested at the Spurs game singing "If you don't do the bouncy you're a Y*d"

A Spurs fan will appear tomorrow charged with the same thing after singing "Y*d Army" All are potentially looking at 3 year football banning orders if found guilty, along with any other punishment the court may impose.

After many warnings the club/police appear to be taking action.

a Spurs fan was on radio over the weekend responding to a debate raised by the stoke fans singing the Munich song to utd fans. He’s a jewish spurs fan and has lobbied Levy for years about the Y*d army chant (first time I’ve ever put a * in the word) says he often walks out when it’s chanted by our fans. He compares it to a team calling them selves N****r army. I’m being serious that’s how offended he was and how he likens the historical impact of the word y*d.

I’m not sure how I feel about it anymore. I’m 32 and we’ve been that army by name forever in my life time and still I am naïve to it’s actual meaning … or at least how the word was born and the context it was used. I’m prepared to accept whole heartedly the use of the N word is abhorent and damaging, so should we be more aware of it’s comparison to y*d?
I used to innocently shout it out at train stations in London and wait for it to be echoed as it always was day or night. It seems ridiculous that anyone would shout out another racially sensitive word and be excited to hear it repeated.

Are there any Jewish fans on SC that have an opinion on this?

Should we take our lead from levy and the other high profile Jewish fans in charge of the club? or do we think they hate it but are willing to let the slur pass for the sake of keeping us all sweet? If you found out inside Levy was ashamed and angry but was keeping up appearance would you feel bad and stop or would you think “fuck it” and carry on?

So that would be 10 minutes into every game then?

To me, a word is a word, and it only becomes powerful if you allow yourself to exaggerate its power. 'Yid' means a spurs fan to me now. Thats all. Censorship would make it naughty and forbidden.

Ps Im not jewish in case that has any bearing.

It's bollocks...it's forgetting the reasons behind associating ourselves with that word, it's political correctness and anti-racism gone mad.

There are some uniquely sensitive types out there who are devestated by the use of a word but wouldn't so much as blink if you punched them in the face. No word can be offensive in itself, it's the meaning we give to it that causes the problems. Much like the decrease in offense of the F word - entirely because everybody uses it more frequently than in previous times. If we ban people from using the word Yid then we'll just increase the amount of offense it can cause and give the racists and holocaust deniers a nice handy weapon to hit us with.

Besides, I thought everyone knew where the Yid Army thing came from and how it is the polar opposite of being racially abusive. Words can change their meanings over time, I'd argue this one has.

Equally, in generations to come when the historical significance of the 'N word' has been lost and the only context is in hip hop videos, that word will lose its 'power' too.

Possibly i'm not there to defend how authentic the fella was. He could have walked out only when he was offended and the team was losing. He might have shelved his indignance on the days we were playing well.

It's what he said afterwards that got me thinking, if the word is geniuely born out of similar hatred and pain to the N word then regardless of what we all thought we knew about it we have to have a little think and a discussion about it.

I think it does make a difference that you're not jewish. I think i need to read some comment for poepl who it might direclty effect

Did'nt the official site have an article on this subject a couple of years back, where they asked for feedback from supporters on how they reacted to the use of this word?

It's just so frequently used. Even walking around Leeds in my spurs shirt I've been called yiddo by other passing spurs fans. I even called a little kid wearing one it the other week when passing him his ball back.

I reckon Levy and the club are paying lip service to the Yid Army chant. If the club really wanted to ban it they would ban the drummer as most of the time it is sung after his drum intro and not before.

There`s no police in the grounds anymore so someone has complained to a steward who in turn has got the police involved who in turn asked dear fucking deirdre what he should do.
Arresting football supporters for chanting = easy life.
Saving a woman and her daughter from being hounded to death = too much trouble.
The country is fucked, will the last one out please turn off the light.

This is crazy. Spurs fans can't chant Yid Army anymore? This is really worrying now. Its more than a chant, its our identity.

Simplified view...
The N word was deliberately used by black rappers for black people to take away its historical significance and the power it gave other races as weapon of dominance and hatred.

Tottenham indirectly copied the line taken from black rappers with the chant of Yid army to embrace and deflect the hate shown from wet spam and chelski mainly with there gassing songs.

Suppose it'll have to be "Jermain Defoe, he's a bro" from now on then?

No, too many connotations with his colour. it'll be "Jermain Defoe, he's a very good, but sometimes erratic strikerrrrr...."

It just doesn't have the same ring... :(
