TOM Carroll is set to move from Tottenham Hotspur to Derby County on loan for the coming season.

Carroll has impressed in his few first team appearances for Spurs and was sent out on loan last season to then Championship side QPR to get more experience under his belt. He had previously been on loan at Derby during a brief spell in 2012.

The 22-year-old creative midfielder made his Spurs debut in a Europa League play-off match against Heart of Midlothian in 2011.

He featured intermittently under Andre Villas-Boas before his loan move and is seen a potential Spurs star of the future.

Steve McClaren has a history of developing young British players and Spurs feel that their young starlet will make progress under his tutelage

A Championship team again? Benteleb's going to be in our first team squad in all likelihood- shows the massive difference in current ability.

If it has to be a loan then that's a good one, they played very good football last season and just missed out on PL in play off final.

Good move for Carroll, fom the little I`ve seen, he`s not ready for the PL yet. He didn`t exactly set QPR alight last season if truth be told.

I personally think that the Championship is the right level for him. He doesn't have enough ability or movement to make up for his lack of physical presence and speed.

For a player to make it in the Premier League he should have the ability to excel in The Championship - he did not have an especially good season at QPR last year, think people get a little over-excited about him....

I think this will be a good move for him.

Tbh I don't think he has developed quick enough to make it with us. Especially with our abundance of central midfielders I don't see him getting into the side ahead of any of them.

I doubt he would even get in the Derby team to be honest, they struggle to find a place for Will Hughes who is a far better better player than Carroll is.

I have a friend who is a season ticket holder at Derby and he wasn't impressed with Carroll at all the last time he was there.

This would be the right move. Derby play in a style that will really help him and SM is a great coach too, he'll actually bring him on as a player no question.

QPR were a torrid team to watch last year, Derby were anything but, make our break loan though he won't get a better situation to show his abilities.

I thought Hughes played a lot last season save later in the season when he was injured no?

Exactly. Carroll's last chance to show he's worth it. If Pochettino doesn't want him in the first squad at the age of 22 that says a lot. If he's remotely good enough he won't move on loan.

One last loan move to make up our minds and for him to prove himself would be good. No excuses.

At QPR he suffered in the end, particularly after January when all Harry's wheeler dealing meant they had loads of midfielders. Derby won't be buying up loads of has-beens from the Prem to bloat their squad.

I don't think he'll make it with us in the end - but i'd like to be proved wrong and a Prem loan seems unlikely at this stage, whereas Derby is about as good as we can hope for in the Champ

The fact it's championship again says all it needs to. He's 22 now. I'd have moved him on but I guess one last chance out of on loan. Really liked look of him 3/4 years ago, hasn't developed at all imo, especially physically.

I was kind of hoping he'd be around our squad this season or a EPL team loan, but having been put right by @beats1 about Derby and then watching them in the playoffs, I can't think of a better championship side. They played much better football than QPR.

If it's about pure ability, vision and incision of passing then Carroll probably edges it out of the two, I think it's just that Brntaleb's mentality is that bit stronger.

He was awful at QPR

So weak and out of his depth - always looking for the safe ball but unable to do so with the type of pass and move tempo that got a team working, he slowed things down and stunted the team with his passing and whenever he tried to make a more expansive pass it would be intercepted or go straight out of touch more often than not

He's not longer a teenager and now is the time he needs to be showing what he can do - he's at the stage where the established players ahead of him in the team aren't even that much older than him and if he's ever going to force his way in he needs to start producing now and playing at a level to show he has the potential to be a fixture in our team

If we'd have got a decent offer to sell him I'd have happily taken it as personally I just don't see him making it at our level now but I am not against loaning him to a decent Championship outfit because if he gets game time and does well he will at the very least increase his value and he wouldn't get any game time with us this year nor would he play a significant role at any PL side

I think he needs to increase his strength and I worry why he's not done so and how seriously committed he is to optimising his career

Good luck to the kid - I hope he has a great year and becomes more Aaron Ramsey than Dean Parrot or John Bostock in his development but to be honest I doubt he will even reach the heights the like of Jamie O'Hara and Dean Marney did in a Spurs shirt

Now is the time for him to prove us all wrong on loan and show us both how good he can be and how much he wants it - something of a cross road moment in his career I suspect

I'm sorry BC, but there's no way Carroll is better than Bentaleb. Maybe Carroll's vision is a bit better but that's about it.

You really struggle with reading and comprehending. It wasn't a long post. Next time give it 10 seconds to sit in your brain before blurting out your repost.

I didn't say better. Better is a very subjective term when comparing two different entities that share some similar qualities. I said he has marginally more vision and incision in his passing.

I would choose to keep Bentaleb of the two as well. Because although I believe Carroll is a slightly more intelligent user of the football and his passing occasionally has a tad more vision and incision - Bentaleb's is also pretty decent, if more functional generally - but I think he has a stronger mentality and I also think he would be more use in Pochettino's (normal 4231) system.
