The reason for wanting Hudd off wasn't that he was having a bad game but that he was dead on his feet after 70 mins. He needs to improve that for sure. His slowness indirectly caused the penalty too. I think in general everyone played well with Wilson and Corluka the stand out two. Bassong also had a great game and King once again showed his class by playing so well after not having a pre season.

Re watch the last 20 mins and see how many times the Hudd made blocks and clearances. He might have been tired, but he reads the game very well and it was right to keep him on.

Thanks kindly for all the quick replies.

He likes to do his homework early doesn't he? I probably need to go read the ITK thread.

Great result to start and a great overall performance from all the lads.
Still need to stop giving away possesion so easily when on the ball and just knocking it into empty spaces, but hopefull harry will iron it out!.

Very encouraging start!...upwards and onwards..

I don't disagree with that. Tho there were times he didn't make it to close down a player when you'd have expected him to. He was sitting too deep and thus allowed Liverpool to attack, wave after wave towards the end. If he'd have had more in the tank he'd have been up with Wilson instead of virtually being the 5th man in defence. He's a good player with potential but to be of any use in a 4 man midfield he has to work on his fitness. I was surprised today at the way he put himself about, closing down and making tackles, especially in the 1st half. This might be why he faded....

Yup. Carrick wasn't a highly mobile or aggressive DM.

Both Jol and Carrick have spoken about the training ground time they put into Carrick's defensive positioning, and into learning how to "nick" the ball through timing and reading.

Big Tom is finally learning to shield the back four, through positioning and reading of the game. If his decision making with his passing - when to move it simply and quickly, when to play the long crossfield ball or try a killer ball - also continues to develop, then we may have quite a player.

Yeah, they might come sniffing around, but we have good depth. I mean look at our bench today. I don't know if I really want to give that up. I suppose if we get Sissoko, we can let Jenas depart.

JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED TO START OUR SEASON OFF. Victory against the bin-dippers and well deserved too.
Well done 'Arry for your team selection and although most of us didn't agree with you, you proved why you're the manager and none of us are.

We played as a well balanced team....... and our short and long passing was sweet, oh so sweet, making the bin dippers run their ragged arses off trying to kep up with us.

MOM in MHO was Wilson but I was also well pleased with Hudd as his passes kept the bindippers on the hop throughout the whole game.

I now look forward to the next game to see what 'Arry's away tactics will be, i.e will we go for a draw or an outright win ?

talking of Villa, I think we'd be mad to sell Bentley to them. they were dire yesterday, and him going there could be a real spark I feel. he's in a situation where I am sure he feels he owes Spurs something. remember he rejected Villa to come to us-we are the club he wants to play and wants to star for.

football is a game of options. I feel we have some fantastic options now, as we can play any one of two ways. It is likely that at home we are going to want to keep it on the deck and move it fast, so I think we can see the movement, intelligence and pace of Keane (who had an excellent game apart from in front of goal), Defoe, Lennon and Modric working well and coming a lot. but if thats not working, bringing Bentley and Crouch off the bench to change things up is a great thing to have. and in away games where we are getting dominated a bit more and need a little flash of quality, Bentley's technique could be absolutely crucial.

as for Jenas, I wouldn't mind selling him if we can get Sissoko in. if not then forget it, but Huddlestone and Palacios showed what a good partnership they can be today, and Jenas is, and always will be a bit of an in between player for me. its pretty obvious that something's happening on the transfer front with him.

Indeed. I think Liverpool was just the game we needed to kick off the season, a big game for us and the players to get fired up for. Obviously easier to say that now as we've won it, but hopefully we can build on the confidence a result like this will bring.
