If Parker wasn't tripped it would have been 2 against 1. Defoe would have been all alone in the middle, Scotty would have squared it and Defoe would have missed. Therefore I feel it was a clear goal scoring opportunity.

10 men or not we still would've won, especially after going 1-0 up. It was always our win this one.

It will be appealed. However, I suspect that the appeal will be rejected, and in doing so will confirm that Attwell actually got it right. I am going purely on my behind the goal viewpoint however, and may alter my opinion once I see it again.

One thing which annoys me is that all the pundits/phone-ins seem to be unanimous that David Luiz should have been sent off, but that Cahill shouldn't.

For me, if one is a definite sending off, you cannot claim the other definitely isn't, as they weren't that dissimilar. How can people ask the refs to be consistent when the press/media aren't consistent in their own interpretation of the rules???

Also, my initial feeling was that it was very similar to the Sczezny non-red card at Chelsea in that the issue of contention is whether a covering defender would have got across in time. Everyone, including the player himself, claimed that should have been a red card so why is this Cahill incident deemed to be such an outrageous decision by those same people???

The difference between the two incidents is Luiz definately should have been sent off.

Ray Charles, Helen Keller and Stevie Wonder would have sent him off.

The definition is stopping a clear goal scoring opportunity.

That wasn't a clear goal scoring opportunity, he was out on the wing and they had a player nearer their goal than the ball.

Never a sending off.

What defines a 'goal-scoring opportunity' though? Is is an opportunity for the player who got fouled? If so, then it isn't a red card as I don't think it was an opportunity for Parker to score. Or, is it an opportunity in the sense we would have been through on goal 2 against 1? If that's the case, then of course that's a goal-scoring opportunity.

Anybody know?

Last man, has been for years.

Yes we could have created a chance from it, but it was never a clear goal scoring chance, unlike luiz foul on ba in the Newcastle game.

I can only assume he went as there was nobody between parker and the goal, there was a defender who could have cut across but perhaps the ref felt he wouldn't get there?

I see that Cahill's red card has been rescinded. Does anyone know does this now get changed to a booking or does he get away with it completely?

Always thought it would only be rescinded if it was not worth a booking at, if thats still the case then thats a joke as Cahills was at least worth a yellow

It was certainly worthy of a yellow.
And so, on to my favourite topic: why did they FA even look at this, when the referee had dealt with it (no matter how unsatisfactorily), when they refused to do anything at all about Rooney's forearm smash last season, and Suarez's disgraceful assault against Citeh last week, followed by pathetic/comic playacting. Could it, perhaps, be because they are still a bunch gutless sychophants.

I'd say worthy of a yellow, at the most.

It should never have been a red card though.
