That was a terrible game.

We have a problem with our attacking play. We struggled last season against teams that got men behind the ball and we struggled tonight.

Not blaming the kids, but Frederiks, like Lennon, did not come in off the right wing at all. That prevented Corluka from overlapping, if he could. The central two in midfield were too deep, in part because the defence dropped deep all game, so our pressing game was never set to get going. Pav was abysmal. When crosses came into the box there was no movement. No one attacked the front post or the back post.

Say what you want about Crouch but at least when the ball goes wide he spins off to the back post. Pav and Defoe do nothing, and Pav tonight should have owned that back line. Instead I saw one snap shot when the ball dropped in his path, several more shots sent to row z, some misplaced passes, some runs into dead ends or into opoosition players, basically thats it, I'm not defending Pav anymore, we need to get rid. Nothing is better than him.

VdV offers some ingenuity, Bale attacks down the left, and hopefully Adebayor will offer a threat upfront. But if we continue to move the ball slowly, be so static in our attacking movement, if the full backs dont get within 50 yards of the opponents goal, if the defence keeps falling back and the midfield doesnt get beyond the strikers (obviously not all at the same time) then we will drop yet more points against crap teams who are at the very least organised.

On the plus side, it was nice to see youth getting a chance and I think that is what this competition, especially at home, should be used for. I thought Townsend was the stand out but he has had the most football. Took players on, sometimes worked sometimes didnt, but did not hide and did not stop, and that's refreshing to see. I dont think he is a left back and he would do more damage in a more advanced position.

Carroll was close behind him. Great touch and a fine passer, drifted off that left wing and got involved. However with Livermore and Tom deep as well it got a little crowded and we could have done with at least one of them twenty yards or more up the pitch.

Livermore was pretty solid, short simple passes, I think he can do a job but I don't think he will progress to be a first team regular.

Frederiks - he's got paced, but very slight so he cant muscle past people like Bale does (or even Townsend did). Stuck to the right touchline, sometimes to our detriment. We'll see how he progresses....

Kane - worked hard, some nice touches, got crowded out in the middle. Our attacking deficiencies made it hard for him to shine but he made a couple of good runs and had one chance before the penalty. Wait and see what happens

Nicholson - not much chance to shine but had some energy

It was terrible indeed - one of the worst games of footie I've ever seen I think.. And I have to say I can't remember any proper Spurs player having a worse game than tHudd had today (and I like the guy), he had an absolute shocker of a game. Fredericks wasnt much better though, showed hardly any understanding of the game. Andros by far the best player on the pitch, but agree that Caroll was ok and Livermore demonstrates that he is a touch above the others with a cool display. But it was worrying for everyone involved that when Kranjcar - presumably a fringe player this year as well in Harry's mind - comes in and looks the best player on the pitch by a mile..

I agree to an extent, but remember there are some very useful sides left in. It would be rather nice to win it!

I also agree with the assessment of the youngsters. Kane was on to a loser paired up with Pav, who was definitely in Stupor rather than Super mode, but his work-rate was impressive, particularly his willingness to track back and help out. A forward who can tackle? There's a thing!

Carroll impressed more and more as the game went on.

Good post. I especially agree about our deep defence, this I feel is our biggest problem as it creates to much room for the opposition to play and makes impossible for our midfield to press, the same happened at united.
I was really impressed with Carroll kind of reminded me of modric, very good on the ball.

Yeah, obviously it depends on who we have, what the group/round is looking like, plus who is fit and who needs games. I'd expect those youngsters to be on the bench mainly, but hopefully we will qualify for the next round with a game or two to go, and they can start another game or two

I think I must have been watching the wrong match, because I don't recognise this one...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/aug/25/tottenham-hearts-europa-league-playoff

"Europa League visit of Hearts to White Hart Lane had been rendered virtually meaningless by Tottenham's 5-0 victory in the first leg, though that did not discourage a near-capacity crowd from turning up to enjoy an entertaining game ... The exuberance of the crowd perhaps inspired the players to play at a pace that belied the fact that the contest was over..."

if you take remove the outrageous lies, you're not left with much. away fans were fairly exuberant* i suppose.

With a 5-0 lead it was understandable that we would give our youth players a chance to gain first team experience and the likes of Carroll and Kane gave a good account of themselves under the circumstances, but I have to agree with what seems to be the majority opinion here that it was a dire game of football. I've honestly seen better in our local park on Sunday mornings.

As Omar Khayyam wrote, "The moving finger writes and, having writ, Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, ... and that 0-0 score-line and lustreless performance is now indelibly part of Tottenham's record in Europe and can never be eradicated and that is unfortunate to say the least.

There were arguments yesterday evening that we shouldn't even contemplate bringing in players we need for our Premiership games in case of injury and this actually really upset and sickened me, although I could see why many thought that, because Tottenham have a history of playing exciting football and going for glory at any cost and I was slammed for wanting VDV particularly to play in the second half to try and bring some real excitement into the game and perhaps enhance the performance of our youngsters and the poor, pathetic Pavluchenko last night (and I'm not singling him out, there were others who were equally under par).

Sure, we didn't need to do much with that tremendous first leg lead but last night we allowed Hearts to look better than they are and afforded them chances they should never have had and we were, for the most part, un-entertaining and boring and not worthy of a European game at any level and certainly the standard of play and the result did nothing for the reputation of the Tottenham Hotspur I love and have been so proud of for so many years.

Well it wasnt as bad as feared so relieved and pleased for the young guys in the team. Spurs average age 23.9,HMFC average age 24. I thought there was a lot more control in midfield for us. I know it was a dead rubber but I'll take what positives I can after last week. A big well done to the traveling fans, they done us proud. I hear it was a good atmosphere between fans which is good to hear. Good luck with the season gents and I'll keep my eye out for your results.
HMFC till I die. Cheers King Robbo
