Very excited to watch this team with Dembele in it now. Dempsey to come in next match imo:
Friedel
Walker Gallas Verts BAE
Sandro Dembele
Lennon Sig Bale
Ade

Yep, agree it's going to be an interesting day. Can't see it being anything but this line-up.

Given the drama of yesterday I'm ever so impressed by how friendly in general people have been today.

Is it cos we are used to eternal disappointment? Or are you just all a wonderful great bunch of buggers?

I think most of us agree that the last few days as a whole have been disappointing, but what's done is done. Time to get behind the squad that we've got and help them get us back in to the Champions League. Complaining about Levy or any of the players isn't going to help, is it?!

The more I think about Dempsey, the more I like the idea of him as a signing. Means that when Bale crosses in, he should have 3 targets that should make it in there - Ade, Dempsey and Sig - that are all very good in the air. When I think of last season and all the crosses that had noone to hit because VDV dropped deep (and isn't that great in the air anyway) and Lennon wasn't in there (and, again, too short) it makes me happy that we got him. Also, on set pieces we have:

Sig delivering (infinitely better). Bale, Dempsey, Sig, Ade, Sandro, Dembele, Vertonghen, Caulker/Dawson/Gallas/Kaboul that are all 6 foot + and better in the air than their predecessors (or, obviously, identical). Should get a lot more combined with set piece training this year.

Todays lineup should be:

Friedel

Walker
Gallas/Caulker
Vertonghen
Ekotto

Sandro
Dembele
Sig

Lennon
Ade
Bale

Bench: Cudicini, Naughton, Dawson/Caulker, Livermore, Carroll, Townsend, Defoe

Jenas will probably be in for Carroll but personally I would rather have someone that can ball-play if we need a sub. Otherwise Livermore will cover Sandro or Dembele coming off (Sandro moving into dembele's position if it is mousa sacrificed) and JD will cover Sig. The rest are all obvious.

I've had my piss and whinge this morning. It's done now, so we just have to get behind AVB and the team. He is under pressure already and he could use a big win today to keep the meeja quiet for a week

Is it his time to step up now?

AVB made it clear he never wanted to sell him and I imagine he was kept from a loan when the Moutinho deal fell through.

Nearly 26 years old now - could he be our player to keep possession ticking over? I'm not convinced but think he deserves a chance until January.

You are right to not be convinced. He is not a player who keeps the ball ticking over. He gives the ball away more than any other regular central midfielder we have had in recent years, including Palacios. Keeping it ticking over does not mean continually conceding possession by trying expansive long balls or failing with attempted hopeful balls over the top for strikers. He is nothing like Modric at all. Jenas is better in that role than Hudd. So is Parker. The only place Hudd could be useful is possibly in the 2 of a 4231 with someone very fucking busy (like Sandro) next to him to compensate for his lack of dynamism, and then he'd need to stop wasting the ball as much as he always has, and I still think he'd struggle to adapt to a high tempo, pressing, passing and moving game that AVB will want, no matter what formation.

AVB wants his wide men to cut in and support the lone striker. Expect to see a lot more of him in the middle.

Yep, with no vdv there will be more pressure on Bale to score. He sure ain't gonna do that if he's hugging the touchline for 85-90 mins.

really disappointed that Ade and Dembele aren't starting. Slightly perplexed to say the least.
