Spurs vs Portsmouth Preview

Tottenham and Portsmouth lock horns in a vital clash with added intrigue at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Harry Redknapp takes on Pompey for the first time since he left Fratton Park to replace Juande Ramos, while Jermain Defoe is set to line up against his former club less than a fortnight after sealing a transfer back to Spurs.

There is also a return to White Hart Lane for Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell, who received abuse from travelling supporters during the fixture between the sides earlier in the season.

Tottenham and Portsmouth have appealed to their fans to be calm but the match remains crucial for both sides.

Spurs have slipped back into the relegation zone after picking up just two points from five games, while Portsmouth are only in a marginally safer position following four successive defeats.

Spurs news

Redknapp was critical of his players in the wake of last weekend's 1-0 defeat to Wigan and has demanded an improved performance against Pompey.

Redknapp experimented with a 5-3-2 formation at the JJB Stadium and is likely to make changes as he searches for a successful formula.

David Bentley, Aaron Lennon and Tom Huddlestone all started on the substitutes' bench and will be hoping to come back into the side, but Jermaine Jenas is doubtful with a calf injury.

Alan Hutton (metatarsal) remains a long-term absentee and Benoit Assou-Ekotto is suspended but goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes is expected to shrug off the problem which hindered his movement against Portsmouth.

Roman Pavlyuchenko is likely to be given another chance to see if he can forge a lethal strike partnership with Defoe.

Pompey news

Portsmouth head to London with some confidence following the 2-0 FA Cup victory over Bristol City in midweek, but they have yet to play a league match in 2009 following the postponement of their home game against Manchester City.

Tony Adams, who is keen to bring in reinforcements this month, selected youngster Marc Wilson at Ashton Gate and may hand him another opportunity if Sean Davis fails to recover from a stomach virus.

Arnold Mvuemba is also in contention for a midfield role as Papa Bouba Diop and Richard Hughes are both still out.

Possible starting XIs

Tottenham: Gomes, Corluka, Woodgate, King, Bale, Lennon, Zokora, Modric, O'Hara, Defoe, Pavlyuchenko.

Portsmouth: James, Johnson, Distin, Campbell, Belhadj, Nugent, Wilson, Kaboul, Kranjcar, Traore, Crouch.

PREDICTIONS:
Skysports.com prediction: Spurs 2 Portsmouth 1
Sky Bet odds: Spurs 4/6 Draw 13/5 Portsmouth 9/2
One to Watch: Jermain Defoe

Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas has a calf injury and looks set to miss out, while left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto will complete his four-match ban.

Keeper Heurelho Gomes has been training despite picking up a knock at Wigan.

Portsmouth manager Tony Adams expects Sean Davis (virus) and David Nugent (hamstring) to both be available.

Pompey were unable to complete the signing of Jermaine Pennant from Liverpool in time for the winger to play at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham (from): Gomes, Cesar, Alnwick, Corluka, Gunter, Bale, Dawson, King, Woodgate, Rocha, Huddlestone, Zokora, Modric, O'Hara, Lennon, Bentley, Taarabt, Bent, Defoe, Pavlyuchenko, Campbell.

Just seeing Camp****'s picture pisses me off.

This is a very important win, I hope Defoe isn't affected that he is playing against his old team. But I guess he's playing for his old team again that he loves!

Will our match announcer say "And wearing 23, welcome back to........" or will he just not do the normal welcome to Crouchy, Kaboul and Pamarot either?

Gomes rises from the dead....again. Gotta love the fella - deffo got a career in acting when he finishes (joke in case the Gomes fawners get hot flushes).

Ekotto is serving his last match of a three match suspension to I guess it'll be Bale at LB with Ohara tucked in front and covering.

Hope to see if King can make it as we need some experience and height in the back four. Pompey have some big units up for corners.

well if Bale starts at LB as indicated in the team above, that immediately reduces our chances

the mid looks weak = zoko and modric have not done the biz

so I hope it isn't that team

injuries and suspension have left us fragile

here's hoping HR finds the right mix and we can do it - COYS

8/1 Two Pompey Players Carded For Defoe Fouls

8/1 TWO OR MORE POMPEY PLAYERS TO BE CARDED FOR FOULING DEFOE

JERMAIN Defoe is a 5/4 chance with William Hill to score for Spurs against his former Portsmouth team-mates this weekend - and a 4/7 chance not to score. (Must start for bets to stand).

Tottenham players carded for fouling Sol Campbell
0 1/6
1 4
2+ 20
Portsmouth players carded for fouling Jermaine Defoe
0 1/2
1 15/8
2+ 8
**David James to save a Defoe penalty 16/1
**Defoe to be sent off 25/1
**Campbell to be sent off 25/1
**Campbell and Defoe to swap shirts on the pitch at the end of the game 33/1

William Hill odds: 7/10 Spurs; 12/5 draw; Portsmouth 9/2
**SPURS to score in both halves - 13/8
**PORTSMOUTH to score in both halves.

Placing bets on players to trade blows in game followed by a bit of shirt lifting afterward,s wtf good job i keep my betting to SC.

Huddlestone must start tomorrow. We have so missed his passing and vision.

Yes, at least if we can go with Jenas and Hudd in MF they are both capable of scoring. When they played in Harry's first 2 matches we scored 6 goals.

Gomes

Gunter King Woodgate Corluka

Lennon Hudd Jenas Ohara

Pav Defoe
