Wow he's dropped Soldado.

Not sure about this one at all, not going to do anything for his confidence.

On a side note our bench will be one of the strongest ever put out by us in the prem era.

Definitely not sure about dropping Soldado.. sure he wasn't scoring but he was linking up very well with Eriksen and Siggy..

Defoe's big chance, he's showed good link up in his little cameos in the prem but he has to do more than what he has in the Europa games. He scored fair enough but was very peripheral aside from that. Hope AVB isn't overlooking what Soldado offers to the team in terms of movement.

Spurs Official: Lloris; Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Naughton; Dembele, Paulinho; Townsend, Eriksen, Sigurdsson; Defoe.

It's mad to think we'll have two players on the bench worth a combined total of over £50m, but it is good to see AVB awarding form. I can't blame him for starting Defoe, especially against his old club.

Drop Maiga for our game, cheers.

That team doesn't look too bad if I'm honest.

Great to see Defoes efforts rewarded with a start today. That's what it's all about. Perform well and you get a starting place. There's plenty of competition and players fighting for their place now.

Defoe has a great record against West Ham too so heres hoping he gets a goal or two today.

I dont think Soldado will be affected negatively. He isn't the type of player to let his head drop. He'll just fight harder. Still early days for him anyway and plenty of games to come good.

Disagree.. this will make him more aggressive to fight back for his place. But agreed the BENCH does look strong.

Wow - defoe and townsend part of our front 4. Its going to be tedious watching those two this afternoon.

Shoot. Shoot. Shoot. Shoot. Shoot.

Lamela - £26m and not really given a chance to prove himself.

I'd rather Soldado started but Defoe has earned his chance and now has to take it.

Defoe starts...

interesting. I think it shows that AVB is a man of his word when respecting form. He gives the guy in form the chance to prove his worth. Soldado will come good with a few substitute/cup appearances to get his confidence up.

I'm pleased to see Defoe starting too and hope he will justify it and score nice and early.

The old adage, if it ain't broken don't fix it comes to mind. Sure Soldado isn't scoring but it ain't costing us any games. So l believe this is folly by AvB, unless of course soldier is carrying.

Have there been good performances though?

I know goals win football matches but Siggy and Defoe haven't exactly shone on the games they've played, albeit they've scored.

I guess it depends as to whether you are of the view AVB rewards goals or good performances.
