I should get it.

Ok so I'm not a sportsman, or have much of a personality, but I've stayed alive this whole year, and one out of three is about right for SPOTY...

If he won it you couldn't trust his acceptance speech. Naturally he'd bang on about Jesus and dedicate the award to our Lord and saviour, which is fine, I suppose, but you couldn't guarantee he wouldn't go n some homophobic rant live on air and I can't see the Beeb taking that risk and nor should they really.

Fair enough, he's entitled to his views and what not but the guy shouldn't be given a platform to vocalise any kind of thought that goes on in his severely unbalanced, deranged brain.

Fair do re the fight though, he deserves his belt even though the division is a joke and Joshua will destroy him in a year or so.

The heavyweight division has been like a drop in shelter for bums for the past decade. So weak probably Since Lewis retired.

Why Hoops?

Genuine question, as far as a sporting achievement, its right up there.
Not a particular great fight, but he won against a slow and aging champion, in a division which doesn't have too much quality.

But I'd be interested to know why you think this is a better achievement over others this last year?

I do agree with Tibsy, it should be based on just sporting achievement, rather than 'personality', but as such it is what it is, and the beeb probably have a lot of influence over it all.

And you know they love a yes man!

The 'personality' element of the title is misleading. The idea of SPOTY is to award "the sportsman or woman whose actions have most captured the public's imagination" each year. The 'personality' is purely for the title, as The BBC Sports Man or Woman of the Year Award would be a bit of a mouthful. But you still get people boring off about how 'Andy Murray hasn't got a personality' or whatever.

Specifically regarding this year I think pretty much every single candidate deserves the award more than Fury, and not just because he's an anachronistic, bigoted dickhead.

Lewis Hamilton became only the second British driver to win a third F1 World title (the first to retain it as well), joint fifth on the all time list of champions and third on the all time list of Grand Prix wins. Chris Froome became the first British cyclist to win the Tour de France, arguably the most gruelling sporting event, for a second time whilst constantly being called a cheat and having piss thrown at him. Lizzie Armitstead retained her World Cup titled and won the Road World Championships (the two biggest events in women's road cycling). Andy Murray almost single handedly won the Davis Cup for Britain for the first time since 1936. Mo Farah became the first man to win back-to-back double World Championship golds whilst also being double Olympic champion in those same events, and elevated himself to the status of one of the greatest distance runners of all time.

I could keep going like this for just about every candidate. Fury punched an old man for half an hour.

He beat a champ nobody else could for 11 years. The 2nd longest serving champ in Heavyweight boxing history.

I wouldnt say it was an upset, because people who follow boxing thought it was a 50/50 fight. But, its a bigger achievement than the other IMO. A more important sport.

Why?

Like that goaty.

To be honest, I was hoping fury would be beat, surprised at how slow klitscho was to be honest, not sure this beats the others, and I prefer a more humble sportsman personally.

Still, fury's achieved something pretty special, like him or not.

His achievement pales in insignificance compared to Murray or Froome.

Even Ennis has a bigger shout.

He is above Hamiltion. So 4th place to the cheeky tinker is about right.

I don't think he's above Hamilton, who don't forget won it last year. Whilst Fury no doubt put months of preparation into his fight, Hamilton won his World Championship by maintaining his level of performance over the course of 19 races in 9 months. Fury had one fight against one opponent that lasted just over half an hour.

Meh.

He was only racing one other driver. His team mate.

F1 is so boring. I can tell you the one two next season if you want.

Oh, I agree, I think F1 is dull as anything. But I still think winning in a sport where you have to consistently be better than your competitors is a greater achievement than winning one fight. Fury didn't even knock Klitschko out or put him on the deck.

This isn't about their achievements, if it was then it would be called Sportsperson of the year. This is sports personality, you have to consider the contribution they have made to promoting their sport, the attitude with which they went about their success and the way they conduct themselves as role models and personalities.

With that in mind, no. No he should most definitely not win the award.

Froome I agree, thats a good achievement. But Murray definetley not. Its not even the biggest prize in the sport and never will be.

As for Ennis, no chance. World champion Pentathlete? Meaningless. Id put Farah above her. Shes only mentioned cos shes cute.

One of the most ludicrous things I've ever read on here. You can't even get her event right.

Triple double and 2 world records. I don't like Farah but he should win this glorified popularity contest with ease.
