Would like him more when he is out of England.... Or at very least out of Liverpool.

Outstanding article on Luis Suarez that tries to help explain why he is a raging lunatic sometimes on the pitch. I'll admit, after reading this it took my hatred down for him a notch. http://espn.go.com/espn/feature/sto...nner-luis-suarez-soccer-most-beautiful-player

I admit it's a bit of TL: DR, but if this is going to be a sob story as to how he came from nothing in some mob-run slum town then I'll be brutally honest and say I don't really care. If that is the case then I feel for Suarez as the child, but not as the adult. There's a shitload of footballers that come from backgrounds like that across the world and don't turn out to be malicious wankers like him on the pitch. Doesn't matter what upbringing you have, there's no excuse for being a ****.

You'd think he wouldn't be an expectant little shit really wouldn't you. I've known only children from billionaire families with the same kind of rage issues. I've also known a guy who was orphaned young and bounced around various relatives and even a stint in foster care. Cracking fella he is, always has perspective.

Suarez would have been a grade A organic **** whatever his background imo.

"It was not a headbutt," he said, sounding triumphant. Then he explained what he learned. It was 2003. Suarez was 16, not 15. Nacional was playing Danubio, another local team, and Suarez never assaulted anyone. He simply protested a referee's decision when a bit of bad luck struck. Sure, his head hit the referee's face, but not on purpose.
"He fell," Martinez Chenlo said, "accidentally into the referee."

Interesting read. A very different life to the pampered existence most English/European footballers would have experienced.

I love the way he plays, he's a street scrapper, a throwback, a thorn in the side of any opponent on a good day or a bad one, and this league is perfect for him.

I can't think of signing I have been more pissed off about (Redknapp, Sherwood, Ferdinand) fucking up than this one. Bergkamp and Petit come close, but this little fucker would have almost certainly ensured CL football for us for the last 3 years and his tenacity and work rate would have been infectious, as it is for Liverpool.

He's like Tony Montana on the pitch... a coked up, angry psychopath.

Is there a section where he talks about how he ate octopus 3 times a day?

We could never know for sure, but at the time we were a much better proposition.

I wouldn't normally be so bullish about one player making all the difference in terms of CL either, but when you think how close we have been and what Suarez almost guarantees, it's hard not to. The bloke never sulks or comes out half arsed or saves it for the big games. He plays every game like its a cup final.

Yes, but it was Liverpool. They probably paid much more and are a far bigger club.

I agree with any superlative you throw at Suarez as a footballer. I am not sure I'd want such a person at Tottenham and in any case it's a bit of a stretch to say "we would have got him if we wanted, we would have then got into the CL forever more and it's all Redknapp, Sherwood and Ferdinand's fault". I am not even sure you can blame the last two anymore than you can blame the tea lady. Wasn't Broomfield still our scout then?

According to Ruud Gullit, Redknapp sent Sherwood and Ferdinand to watch Suarez with a view to making an assessment and according to Redknapp, Suarez was available to us but they reported back he was too similar to VDV.

I agree, it is foolish to claim any player will guarantee you anything. But I can't think of a player who we could have realistically actually signed who could come closer to that claim being viable. When you think what he brings, and the small margins we missed CL by over the last few years. Imagine him playing instead of Defoe ? How many more goals and points would that have been worth ?

I accept Liverpool's place in the kudosphere of football, but at that time their stock was extremely low and ours extremely high. Even players like Sigurdsson and Dempsey were choosing us.

But that is all moot, as Sherwood, Ramsey and Redknapp between them decided he wasn't "right". The rest, I accept, is all supposition.

Well exactly.

And we are assuming he would have performed as well as he has for Liverpool. To be honest, he wasn’t amazing when he first joined in terms of output although you could see the chutzpah and quality with which he played. It was only really the last two seasons where he really excelled. The thing that seemed to hold Redknapp back was that he wasn’t a target man and couldn’t play on his own. We were clearly looking for a Crouch with more dynamism and better goal tally, i.e. Dzeko. Everyone now accepts that is untrue but then Liverpool bought him at the same time as Carroll so were perhaps pleasantly surprised about how he has taken to the role. To be honest, they are reaping the same benefits that we did from Bale over the last two seasons; having the luck to have someone that has turned himself into a truly fantastic player.

I’m still unsure who went to watch him: Bloomfield, Sherwood, Ferdinand, Redknapp or Ramsey.

This is all a bit of a red herring because, as we discussed a year or so ago in SC, I wouldn’t want him at the club. No footballer is a saint, most are idiots but he is particularly spiteful, vicious, childish and most importantly racist. I’d rather have players with more integrity. I can’t imagine ‘supporting’ or cheering him on.

whilst I agree that with hindsight we should have just fronted up the cash and paid them whatever the fuck they wanted, but if I remember correctly weren't we the only real players in the market for him and so Levy was doing his Levy thing and trying to play the long game with silly low ball bid when Chelsea came in for Torres late in the window - forcing Liverpool into a bunch of panic'd rash seemingly overpriced 'pay whatever you want' signings that included messrs Suarez and Carroll.

Had we fronted up at the beginning what they wanted he would have been ours and possibly at less than what Liverpool paid.

Again, thats how i remember it. I might be wrong.

I thought it was a good read. Doesn't confine some of his behaviour and there's a bit of puff about it for my tastes, but it's a good read.

I'm far more interested in Suarez the man now, but rather than hate him the way some of you seem to, I see a guy who did everything wrong when he got here, let down everyone who supported and stood up for him with the bite and the alleged racism, and has since taken stock and improved himself as a man and as a footballer. He's a controversial character but he's also become a great leader and as far as I know one who behaves far better than he used to (though I wish he wouldn't dive).

We all make mistakes, it's how we respond that defines us. I think he's responded well over the past year.

Meh. Lets wait another year or so before we say he's responded well after the bite. He didnt have another outburst after the first bite for a year either and then after the racism. True test is in the future. He still blatantly dives every game and acts like a twat when he doesnt get his way. Just hasnt escalated into more again yet.

Thought it was a good piece and pretty damning on Suarez and Uruguayan football as a whole.
