Surely we have higher ambitions then Carlton bloody Cole, would be a joke if all we could muster up for Champions League is an average striker for WHU. I don't believe it for a second.

I don't really rate Cole but if you think of the players that are currently available who can hold the ball up and wouldn't cost the earth, he is an option. We can buy Cole Bellamy, Fabiano etc but if we don't get a front man who can play up there on his own and also offer us some physicality, we are going to be very one-dimensional. Lest be honest, Fabiano is just not going to play up front on his own, he will get kicked all over the place at places like Blackburn and Stoke.

I want a much better player than Cole, but we need to keep our options open.

Ive got a contact at the club and he told me that we had spoken to carlton cole before the end of last season and that he could well be at the club by august so this makes sense.

Hmmm, would a strike force of *A. Superstar*, JD, 3MP and C.Cole be too bad?
I see potential in Cole but it's just going to take a decent manager (like 'Arry or Woy) to get his head right. I think that he'd be a better 4th choice than a grumpy Keane or sulky Pav.
For the right price, he could be a good addition to the squad and turn into a bit of a bargain.
You can't keep 4 superstar strikers happy - well, it's fucking hard to at least.

I just don't think Cole can improve our team, he's not got the quality. We really need to be aiming much higher than this IMO.

If we are planning to move out 2 of our current strikers (not resigning Eidur perhaps also) then we would probably need to bring 2 new ones in and its unlikely that both would be starting star strikers.

Cartlon Cole brings a physical presence upfront we have not had for as long as I can remember and would be a decent enough squad member I suppose. Defoe and New striker upfront with Cole and Crouch on the bench would be mildly acceptable I guess.

Personally I would rather we sign Bellamy than Cole as I feel he is more versatile. I have a feeling this one won't happen though, but if it does it will probably not be as bad as it seems at face value.

Don't mind Cole. Would be handy away at the horrible places like Stoke.

I wouldn't mind bringing him. I just hope we add another striker in addition to him. I think he might be Pav's replacement.

I am clearly in the minority here but I really would not mind cole at all. he is not the player that was at Chelsea and went on loan to Villa, he has come a long long way since then.

I thought he was excellent last season before his injury and was getting back to that towards the end of the season. We have to think who would be most effective for the team. He is very strong, holds the ball up well and last season added a bit of composure to his finishing (something JD could really do with doing imo)

I know he isn't the big superstar foreign import but I really think he could do well for us. I would take him over KJH if I was being honest.

I wouldn't be disappointed with Cole.....I would just expect that we had given up on ever making the top 4 again. Seems like a signing of a mid table club

Pav replacement? Pav is probably going but if we line up C.Cole as a replacement, it would be a backward step imo.
I know though that Arry wants to sign british...but i think Bent is better than C.Cole...or agbonlahor (probably mis-spelt)...;-)

Sounds just like what we say for Crouch, how many of these sorts do we need?

I know what you're saying but some people (not you necessarily) have unrealistic ambitions when it comes to players especially when you consider that we need 4 strikers and may at times play one up front (as HR as intimated).

It's hard keeping them all happy obviously, Keane is a good example of this and I think he's going to leave because he isn't first choice anymore. And that's just now. Then lets add in a marquee signing maybe a Fabiano, Forlan, Suarez, Huntelaar or whoever it may be. NOW you're putting Defoe's nose out of joint, not to mention Crouch's and Pav's. Is Gudjohnsen happy to play a bit part as well? Some people want us to sign TWO of the above players - it's just not realistic even with the CL thrown into the mix.

Even clubs like Man Yoo after Rooney, have strikers who are just not of the same quality because if they did they wouldn't suffer the lack of game time or the effect it has on their game (Berbatov has suffered partially for this reason at least, Rooney did when Ronaldo was king etc.).

So why not sign a top class striker AND someone like Cole who is very versatile and use him as back up when we need him most? He is more capable of playing up front on his own than any other striker we currently have. Like Crouch he can hold the ball up but is far more mobile. Like Defoe he's quick and knows where the goal is but is much stronger and can hold the ball up/lead the line in a way Defoe can't. AND he can play with another striker and bring others into the game. I bet Defoe or Keane wouldn't be unhappy with him as a strike partner. And to be honest I think our current strikers don't compliment each other very well - it's an area were a little unbalanced IMO.

The game last season at Upton Park he was magnificent leading the line on his own, caused our centre halves all sorts of problems and scored a wonder goal. I know he messed up for Defoe's goal but that shouldn't detract from his excellent performance in a very poor team who offered him very little help. Put him in the Spurs team with the quality we have and he could be a match winner.

I'm not saying he's the best thing since sliced bread, but there's most definitely room for a player like him at Spurs especially when you consider our current striking options, especially if he is happy to be part of a squad. And on his day he's pretty fucking special...

An excellent post if I may say so Steve.

My fear is that Cole is so similar in style and gait to Darren Bent, that it wouldn't take a great deal for the great unwashed to get on his back after a miss that costs a point or two.
