Useless stats without context.

I was watching SSN earlier and they did a comparison for DDG and Dean Henderson, they said that DDG has 3 errors leading to goals and kept banging on about why he should be no1 for Man Utd and it got me thinking...



How the entire fek is errors leading to goals give you a proper judgement of how a player has performed? What we just gonna ignore the times when the other teams didn't score...you fucked up but don't worry the other team didn't score so we're gonna ignore that! Okay no cool, same energy...let's discount goals from strikers that if they were directly from defender's and goalkeepers errors shall we lol.

Another useless stats is an assist, sorry but it is. Assists can only really be judged on the creator and finisher, not solely the creator...so when people say he got x amount of assists as to lend weight to an argument like so and so is the best passer, it's nonsense

Fact of the matter is they simply don't know how to use stats. At all. They are trying to pitch into the hipster viewers without really realising that stats need context as you say.

The one that irks me the most though is when a team are linked or sign a defender or defensive midfielder and Sky/Sun/etc throw in a "*name* who has scored 3 goals for *team*" as some sort of crucial stat in the first two or three paragraphs. ?

I don't really pay attention to what sky say to be honest but it can be annoying when you're talking to pals and they reel off stats like the de gea/Henderson one you mention cause they take sky for their word.

What other useless stats are there?

The goalkeepers stat especially is so easy to piss on. A keeper who stays on his line and doesn't come to claim an easy cross that leads to a goal is not judged to have made an error simply because of his inaction. So do you want an inactive lump who lets attackers get easy chances or do you want keepers to at least look like they're trying even if they will sometimes end up with egg on their faces?
