If you're going to play a lone striker it needs to be Bent, I honestly don't believe Keane can do it.

and I'd probably have Malbranque ahead of Jenas if we're talking DM and not signing one

Same formation i've played with Spurs on FM, for the past three seasons. Different team though.

I HOPE that Berby stays but.....either way....the team is, at last, beginning to look like a team that can go places (4th +). Added to that, we are, no doubt, going to bring in 1 or 2 other options?
Last year was promising, this year is even more so? The lessons of 'yesteryear' are still 'fresh' and Ramos is no fool....= Happy Days at WHL (and all over the Premiership 08/09). Gosh there I go again? DREAMS are invaluable? COYS!

So... you're for or against the Dutch system?

I can see something like a 4-1-2-2-1

You have your basic back four, with full backs bombing on.

Huddlestone as defensive midfielder, great long range passing, can do ok as a centre back so can cover them, always looks for the ball, I think if you put him in the centre then it might sort out his positional sense.

Then Modric and Jenas (or Zokora for a defensive option, or dos Santos for an even more attacking one)

With dos santos and Keane behind berba, in a fluid three man attack.

I just get the impression that we wont be able to find this guy who will sort out the midfield, so we will have to abandon a midfield 2 (that you get in a 4-4-2) and we will the try to be more fluid in attack

Modric has got Kovac as the defensive midfielder behind him, and Kranjcar is a bit mroe of an offensive midfielder (like dos santos in his last game for barca when he scored a hattrick)

We are still missing this top notch DM that all our players seem to play with for the countries. Modric has Kovac, Zokora has Y. Toure, Jenas had Hargreaves/Barry when he played for England against the swiss. I know Ramos thinks the same, problem is trying to think of who we could buy that could start doing the job from the start of the season is very difficult. Its hard to bring in someone to lead from the moment they make their debut

I think that if you replace Jenas with Huddlestone and fingers crossed Keane with Berbatov we have ourselves a side there. I think that in that set up then, he needs to make clear to Zokora that his only job is to spoil, and win ball, and play it simple for Hudd to distribute to the 4 attacking players.

Strange i was thinking along the lines of the dutch formation for us next season.
Like already said i think we would need more of a target man upfront to play this.. Berbatov or a new signing. I love keane though, he has done great over the last 2 seasons!

If we get a solid DM then i reckon it could be perfect.. at the moment i think we could be introuble as we misplace a lot of passes and there isnt really many people to break the play up and retrieve possession.
2/3 signings in our weaker positions and i think we could be challenging for 4/5th next season.

I would swap keane for lennon in that formation as lennon works best as an out and out right winger using his pace, he isnt the best technically and when he comes inside his pace can be nullified meaning his strengths are not being played to and therefore becomes a passenger. with berbatov holding the ball up and dropping it off for the forward runs of keane, modric, dos santos et al would be brilliant

Why you assume that Berba leaves? As there's no team who will meet our asking price.

Actually that formation plays differently depending who you put up top. If we play Bent up top we'd play more like Liverpool and expect Bent to get in behind the defense. With our current talent though I'd prefer to get a striker who can hold the ball up and bring others into play, something Berbatov is very good at. If we lose him, it'd be tough to find another target man with the class of RvN or Berbatov though.

I think a variation of 4-5-1/4-3-3 is pretty likely - it's becoming the standard in modern footy anyway. Maybe we could play something like something like:

Robbo
Hutton Woody King Bale
Modric Jenas
Lennon Keane Giovani
Berba

I'm going to remain positive and hope Berba stays (I will take the credit if he does) because we need a proper, line-leading, number 9 if we want to play 4-2-3-1. Modric seems to sit pretty deep for Croatia, so I'd imagine he'll be in the middle 2 - hopefully with a real DM incoming to give him the protection he needs. The main problem I can see is the lack of physical presence that side would offer. But on the plus side, the above line up becomes 4-4-2 in an instant if needed - realistically it probably will be most of the time with Steed in for Gio.

I'm really excited about Modric, I love his energy and I think given time he'll be a huge star for us. Gio is going to need longer, I can't imagine him being a regular next season.

and once again, defensive midfields are bandied about and no-one looks to Teemu

assuming he doesn't leave, i'd play him in a DM role any day of the week over Zokora or Jenas. JJ wants to get forward too much with a woeful first touch - it's like wanting to be a juggler and having no hands, it's never going to work like that. Yeah, he's been working on his defensive play, and it certainly showed come the tail end of the season but Teemu adds a fire and aggression that JJ could never offer and Zokora would get sent off for (lets face it, you can't tell me i'm the only one who, when an oppo striker breaks and the only man who can catch him is Didi, covers their eyes waiting for the whistle to go as he scythes through man and ball).

I've still got faith that, given a couple of games in a decent position, not stuck out as a makeshift left back or whatnot, the Fin has a lot left to offer and something that we've sorely lacked too often - a bit of bite in midfield and someone who'll go back in for the second tackle, or third if needed.
