Interesting article just come up:

HAMBURG, Germany: Hamburger SV has reiterated that midfielder Rafael van der Vaart is not for sale.
"We are not selling him. Rafael will have to live with it," sports director Dietmar Beiersdorfer said before Thursday's UEFA Cup qualifying match at Honved Budapest.
Van der Vaart wants to move to Valencia despite having a contract with Hamburg until 2010.
The Netherlands midfielder reported injured to the Hamburg squad for the match and is uncertain to play in Budapest. Van der Vaart said he had injured his back while lifting his one-year-old son.
German media have been skeptical of his explanation and have speculated that he is feigning injury so that he remains eligible to play in the Champions League for another club this season. If he plays in the UEFA Cup for Hamburg, Van der Vaart will not be able to play for another club this season in the Champions League.

Or this, 13th August:

BERLIN, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Valencia have offered Hamburg SV 14 million euros ($19.17 million) for their captain Rafael van der Vaart and the Dutch player says he wants to join the Spanish club.
'I absolutely want to leave, Valencia is my dream,' midfielder Van der Vaart said in an interview with the Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper released on Monday ahead of its appearance in Tuesday's edition. 'If I had to stay in Hamburg it would be painful.' Van der Vaart is contracted to Hamburg SV until 2010 and has said his contract has no escape clause that would allow him to change clubs without a transfer fee. A spokesman for Hamburg SV said that as of Monday morning the club had not received an official offer from Valencia.

The way I see it, money talks, as usual. We can gazump any offer Valencia make. This is a space to be watched after Jol's comments today.

Would love for it to happen... but cant see it.

We will probably end up with another defender instead.

He wants out, but Barca and Real are covered and Valencia has turned towards another target. That being said, I am not hearing any rumors on HSV boards about us bidding.

van Der Vaart would be a great signing for us, but it is a shame he is so expensive now. If we had acted at the right time, we could have got him on the cheap. He would add something special to our midfield, and we would also get the best out of Zokora, hopefully.

I've never been as big a fan of him as others posters on here are, though i do rate him and would be delighted if we signed him. To be fair though, I only really got into watching Dutch football in his last 18 months at Ajax and apparently that was by far the worst period of his career. He moved to Hamburg just after I moved from there back to England, but all my friends there say he is brilliant.

I remember his final days at Ajax, it was actually rather sad to watch such talent get wasted. He was getting played out of position a lot of the time (mainly as a striker), he was overweight and spent too much time trying to be a David Beckham clone in the media spotlight.

But his move to Hamburg seems to have kick started his career again. This guy would be a luxury for us and should be given the no. 14 shirt if he joined us. The guy is the playmaker we've been calling out for. He contributes a lot of goals which we need from midfield, has the ability to read the game and gets into good positions.

If he can stay injury free then he would be a very good signing for us.

Could he play central in a flat 4-4-2 though? I would love us to get someone of that class but he needs to fit the system, otherwise we'll have more square pegs.

According to a Hamburg fan, when Valencia came in for him he was desperate to go, but accepted the boards decision to stay one more year, they will however sell him next year
thanks
to a clause in his contract, he claims it's his dream to play in La
Liga
and the premiership, we would be very lucky to get him this year, or even next year.

i think he will go, he's dissapointed in the club's decision to not improve the squad the way they did last year with all those expensive buys, although understandable after what happened in that season.

vdv will either go to valencia or the premiership, i don't think that he will stay at hsv. he probably knows or thinks that he can't win any trophies there.

he won´t come

in a hamburger newspaper it says that beiersdorfer brought the case VDV to the FIFA and DFL ( german football league) in which he demands that valencia should stop their interest in VDV because he is not for sale.

Stop pinching my sources!

Actually this might even work (slightly) in our favour - Valencia's tapping up here is just pissing HSV off and might make them more willing to sell to us if the price is right. As the Kicker article also points out, the reason for him not playing UEFA last night is pretty flimsy unless it's to maximise his value to a buying club by keeping him elegible to play in euro games.
